Arrival in South America.
Entry 4 of 27 | show all | print this entry |
After a couple of very long flights, I finally arrived in Lima, Peru at about 8 in the evening. Since I had an early flight scheduled for the next morning (at 6 a.m., thereby requiring a 4 a.m. check-in, and since I was more than a little afraid of Lima and therefore didn´t want to leave the airport, I had resigned to having to spend the night sleeping on the floor in the airport.) While looking around for a nice patch of floor to sleep on, I went into the internet cafe.
In the internet cafe, I got to talking to a young couple: The man, Byron, was Peruvian-American and his girlfriend was his Peruvian childhood sweetheart with whom he had been recently reunited. She was at the airport to see him off for his flight back to New York later that night. Coincidentally, she was booked for the same flight as I the next morning at 6. So after talking to each other and getting to know each other for a couple of hours, the guy offered for me to join his girlfriend in a taxi to her hotel and stay the night there (in a separate room, of course! I know what you were thinking!) and return to the airport the next morning with her. It was an amazing act of kindness. The guy even paid for the taxi, which was driven by a friend of his and therefore quite safe. (He wouldn´t have wanted to put his girlfriend in an unsafe taxi!) I did give the taxi driver a very big tip - both out of gratitude as well as to make sure that he would be at the hotel the next morning at 4:30 to bring us back to the airport!
So I got a very good but short 3 hours sleep, had a nice shower, and was feeling very pleased at how things had worked out. (i.e. that I wasn't murdered!) We managed to get back to the airport in time for our flight - after the girl (Silvia) had a bit of a panic about losing her plane ticket. As it turned out, though, her boyfriend had bought an e-ticket for her, which explained why she couldn´t find it.
Conclusion: Well, so far I have been fortunate beyond my hopes. The people I have encountered thus far have been kind, interesting and helpful. This more than makes up for the troubles that I was having just prior to my departure. I am hopeful that things will work out well for the rest of the trip. We´ll see!
