First steps abroad

I remember how different everything seemed. Even though people spoke English, it sounded so much classier and more polite than what I was used to back in Louisiana. Now that I've been exposed to many different English accents I can pretty much determine where the speaker comes from, be it Canada, England, Ireland, South Africa, Australia or New Zealand. I can also tell where most foreigners come from based on the accents with which they speak English. Easiest are the Dutch and the French, both of whom have obvious accents. And when native German speakers speak English, I can often tell if they are from Germany (and sometimes which part of the country), Austria or Switzerland. Essentially most people speak foreign languages with the same accent that they use in their native language.
