Delayed start
Entry 3 of 17 | show all | print this entry |
Yesterday a friend of mine arrived to Bangkok from Phnom Penh with Bangkok Airways - the same airline that I planned to use for my flight to Yangon. His flight was delayed by three hours and in the very back of my mind, I wondered if my flight would also experience a delay. Well, as it turns out, this thought should have been at the FRONT of my mind rather than the back - because we experience the identical 3 hour delay. It seems that the airline ended up with one or more of its planes in the wrong place and the result was that all of their flights were delayed until their schedule could return to normal. The result was that I arrived in Yangon exhausted - having slept only four hours the previous night in order to wake up early for my flight. Oh, well - all part of travelling.
One unusual thing that I saw on my flight was when a stewardess got down on her hands and knees to serve a monk who was flying with us. I had never seen that before. Somehow these people grow up knowing how to behave in such circumstances.
A few days before leaving, I had sent an e-mail to the hotel at which I wanted to stay to ask them to arrange a "free" airport pick-up (as is advertised as one of their services). As it turns out, we ended up paying for that free ride by an increase in our room rate - for both of the days that we stayed there. Like the saying goes: "There's no such thing as a free airport pick-up!"
On our ride from the airport we noticed a lack of motorcycles in the streets - something that is overwhelming in most other Asian capitals. Our driver told us that this was because it is not allowed to drive motorcycles in the city - unless you are a "special" person!
Anyway, back to the hotel: We stayed at the Beautyland Hotel II, which can be described as adequate. Very friendly staff; great central location; clean. But it was not particularly good value for money at $22 / night for a double room. As I said, this price included our pick-up from the airport. Interestingly, it seems that many - if not most - hotel rooms in Myanmar are without windows. We sprang for a room with a window, though, as it feels kind of spooky to stay in a windowless concrete box.
We had a rest in the afternoon, trying to recover from our exhaustion caused by our 3 hour delay for the one hour flight, and ended up having dinner in the hotel.
