Last week in Africa

And so we continue into South Africa.
First stop was a camp site in a winery. We camped on a patch of grass with superb scenery all round us and we arrived early in the day so we had chance to take in tye views, play some table tennis and darts in the bar (I was the table tennis champ and didn't get knocked off the table for a countless number of games. I think I could even take on The Woods and Drakey and win now). We also, despite a hang over from the all dayer previously, booked on our first wine tasting session for early evening. The wine was good for the most part, except a really sweet port which was a bit rough but which, surprise surprise, Vikki 'sweet tooth' Gagan, really liked. It was a pretty basic wine tasting but it was cheap and we had a proper tour scheduled round Stellenbosh later in the week. This was our last night of camping and the so after wine tasting we were cooked a BBQ on the camp site by the team. Next stop Cape Town.
Cape Town was really where the proper travelling begins. The overlanding tour has been brilliant but at times we felt like we were cheating a bit as all arrangements and destinations are chosen for you so you don't have to think for yourself all that much. On arrival on the saturday we made plans with some of the people we had befriended to hire a couple of cars for monday to make our way to the wine areas and then along the coast to Hermanus and Cape Ahghulas, which is the southern most tip of the continent to do some whale watching. In between me and Vik booked on a township tour which takes you to all the slums and shanty towns around the city and which also took in the old area of district 6 and the district 6 museum. The tour was good and we got to see how a lot of the people live in SA. They live in wood and metal shacks and do not have a lot (although they do manage flat screen TV's and Hi-Fi systems in some of them!). We went into a local pub where they brew the beer on site and it tastes rank. You drink it out of these big metal tins (like what cows are milked into) and it is passed round whoever is in the bar (if you can call it that!).
The tour was in the morning and in teh afternoon we walked down to the V&A waterfront and then went and met some people in Camps bay to watch the Wales v Fiji game (even Vikki is getting into the rugby). We had a night out planned so we got a bit drunk, got talking to a white racist south african who was close to getting a beating and then ventured back into Cape Town centre to do a spot of clubbing at Friction on Long Street for MIx Tape Massacre! Come on! The night was ok, had some good DJ's playing average tunes but we had a laugh, got our groove on and stumbled home around 2.30am. Our latest night so far.
The next day involved a hungover hike up table mountain, a must do if your in Cape Town. Vikki whinged the whole freaking way up - 'my toe hurts', 'I've got hangover', 'Can we go back', 'I'll wait here for you' - she made it in the end though and I have to admit it was much harder than any of us expected and coming down wasn't much easier! It was well worth it in the end though, the views were spectacular. Next was car hire and driving time, i'm getting a little bored of typing so will keep this short and sweet. We spent 3 days driving around, first was a proper wine tasting tour which was class. We went to 4 wineries and tasted 20 different wines of which we didn't spit out one drop! We also ate strong cheeses. Mmmmm! We then drove on to Hermanus and departed company with 2 of our friends and then went to stay in a really cool hostel at Cape Aghulas. Really liked it here and stayed on an extra night. The owner of the hostel took us out on his speed boat to go whale spotting and we got within 5 meters of the big bastards. (Jacko, I did an attenbrough impression - 'The Blue Whale.....!). We also went in a lighthouse and generally just explored around the area.
We're now back in Cape Town and are preparing to leave to fly to Perth today (right in the middle of the England game! Mint!) We've been to Robben Island since we've been back (where Mandela was held prisoner) which was OK but overrated if you ask us and we've also been to the cinema.................twice! Was good to be normal though and we've missed our film watching! Bring on Australia where we're gonna have to do some work! Boooooo! More thumbnails ...
