Entry 47 of 51 | show all | print this entry

So I was in Nimbin. Another place that everyone said that I would love. How I love proving people wrong.

This place is alot smaller and actually reminded me of Naqara in Fiji. Seriously. There must have been 1 main high street with about 15 shops on it, and that is pretty much the hub of the town.

This place is famous amongst backpackers for 1 thing only. Weed! Now, I don't smoke weed anymore, but I thought it would be somewhere worth visiting, and it had been hyped by a lot of other travellers. I look back now and all of the recommendations had come from smokers. The town looks like it was big many moons ago, and now what is left is some poor excuse for a shanty town. But it has character. There is a museum in the middle of the town which was cool in some respects and was something I expected to see in Byron. The musuem was just an explosion of art, random quotes pained on bits of wood, a vw campervan half in and out of the shop with maquette dummys hand painted on the inside. It was like being back at college again. Unfortunately this was let down by the fact that the back room of the museum was full of dealers, some as young as ten(looking anyway). There were a few other pieces of art dotted around the town, but I had lost interest by then. There are sunbaked crusty aging hippies everywhere that never quite made it to Byron bay. At least in Byron, there is a bit of an atmosphere. Here that is mistaken for a cloud of ganja smoke.

Went on a tour to this guy's farm called Paul Breaker (i think, but isn't that a character from Lock, Stock?). He came over from the states 27 years ago, bought 40 odd acres of land (now 80) and decided to grow his own botanical garden. The garden is now a recognised national park with 2000 different plants and trees and he has loads of wildlife species in there, somewhere. This guy was a character and a half. Would ramble on and philosophise, forget what he was on about half way through and end his sentence on something like "yeah, so anyway..."(I guess you had to be there). I spent the whole time pissing myself. He had a house buried in the middle of his own made rainforest, we ate some watermelon and listened to some of his interesting stories and tales. Truely awesome. He took us on a mini tour of his forest, let us sniff plants (surprisingly cool) and babbled on some more. This guy isn't a tour or anything. The bus driver just thought we might wanna meet this guy. Whether it had been prearranged or not, I don't know, but he was cool.

Also went on a trek through a rainforest/jungle (whats the difference?) to see some cool waterfall. I wasn't too impressed seeing as I had been to NZ and Fiji, but the view over the jungle/forest canopy was awesome. Really high up as well. But that was about it. The bus that brought us there and back was playing some really cool music. Kinda native digeridoo/drums/ban pipes worked really well as we were going through the jungle, before some bob marley kicked in.

Really cool
