Entry 31 of 51 | show all | print this entry

I'm here and hurting. There was this guy that turned up at the last hostel in Suva, looking for people to sail with him to the Yasawa's, just after I posted the last entry. So far he had a hot Swedish girl and him. He did want F$75 a night though, but still. Bugger his timing dammit!!!

So yeah, er......New Zealand. First impressions? Its cold, they drive on the left hand side, its full of shops.......its England. On the other side of the world, there is a replica country. Better than UK, 'cause its closer to everywhere cool (except Spain and Ireland). The airport is a bit of a trek from downtown Auckland (like 20 mins). Staying in a nice part of town where all the strip clubs and "massage parlours" are. Actually, my shoulders could really do with a good rubbing after carrying my pack everywhere. Ha Ha Ha. Also, there are 1000's of Japanese here. At first, I thought I had landed in the wrong country. There are hardly any Caucasian white people. Crazy!!
Actually, its quite cool. They have a lot of buildings illuminated at night, including the famous Sky Tower (which everyone sky dives/bungees/absails/base jumps etc etc). The city also has a lot of hills. Seriously. It looks like San Fran (even though I've never been) and reminds me of my University days in Wales. And a lot of hostels.

So anyway, I've walked around the city and shops a bit. I met up with the German girl Ulli again. She was living in a rich part of Auckland called Parnell. It was pretty cool. They had loads of art galleries on the way up to her hostel, so my stuck my head around a few doors, but there was nothing worth shouting about. Anyway, she's been here for 6 days, but has done nothing except work on her CV for when she gets to Aus. I'll settle for fruit picking!! So after much deliberation, we have decided to get a van between us and sell it, once we have finished travelling New Zealand. We put up adverts in all the hostels looking for people to travel with us. We have now acquired a English, 6'2, 21 year old Mark and a shortish 30 year old German Susanna. 2 English guys and 2 German girls. Didn't see that one coming!!! We could probably squeeze a few more in a van, but I don't wanna spend a month travelling like a tin of sardines.

So we're looking for a van to travel in, seeing as none of us really have any definite plans for New Zealand. Went to a backpacker car market, where everyone that has just travelled, sells their van(that's our plan too). We have a set limit, and most were over what we were willing to pay. In all honesty, I don't really know why I'm here. It was not on my top five places to go in the world. I'm just here for ticket convenience. Still, there is loads to do here, so bring it on. I think I might skip the scuba diving here, seeing as the water temp is like -freezing. Even the dolphins wear fleece's!!

Last night, sat in a bar called 'emBARgo' (clever eh?), watching these young kids do a acoustic set of random songs, but they played a few gems like Pearl Jam, Blink 182 and Gun's & Rose's. Most of its was just random famous stuff. Proclaimers, Eagles, Beatles, you know the drill. I was air-drumming and air guitaring away, like an idiot. Ended up chatting to this girl about the New Zealand rock/metal scene and just general music, which was cool and a couple of girls from Switzerland about other random paff. Didn't get to bed till 4.

So yeah. The current state of play is......looking for van, before we all go travelling. Probably 2 weeks in the North Island and then the rest in the South Island.

Anyway, I hope that all is cool with everyone.

Adios
