Munich 23rd - 25th July
Entry 2 of 37 | show all | print this entry |
Munich is the quintessential 'nice' city; loads of attractive nice people, friendly people, and good food. However, nothing spectacular, and not much that warrants taking up that much space on the blog. We combined the niceties by eating a picnic of paprika's stuffed with cheese, chili gherkins and artichokes in front of the Nythemburg Palace. Our campsite, aptly named 'The Tent' (like everything else German, their language oozes efficiency and gets straight to the point but is as creative as Sven Goran Erickson's solution to England's midfield dilemma). Anyway, 'the tent' comprises a field to camp in, two festival size tents, and a bar that sells bottles of Koningludwig Hell for 1euro50 (why don't European computers have Euro signs!!). If you don't camp you pay 8 euros, receive a blanket and a number and find yourself a place on the floor inside one of the giant tents. This creates a very friendly atmosphere, loads of travelers from across the world with no choice but to meet and drink, but when we heard of a girl that came back at 4am and was sick everywhere we were thankful for the privacy of our slightly smaller tent.
To add to the backpacker ambiance, and make you feel like a boy scout, everyone sits around the nightly campfire which comes complete with annoying Irish people. On the first night it was a man doing lame renditions of Bob Marley with his guitar. On the second night it was a group of pissed Irish lads who found it appropriate to sing Irish rugby songs to people from America, Holland and Spain (hardly countries that give a shit about rugby). We met some funny characters including a Dutch guy, who when we said we were from Leeds, shouted "Dominic Matteo, Dominic Matteo I love that guy, what a legend! For those who haven't followed Leeds dismal fall into obscurity Dominic Matteo apparently kicked his keeper in the head while playing for Leeds against a Dutch team a few years ago.
So that is Munich, 'nice' and friendly but after a short time in Slovenia we realized the world is more than just 'nice.'
