Day 86 - September 5th 2007
So we are off nice and early to get up Mount Rainier although it is extremely cloudy so there is no mountain in sight. We are pretty much the first people into the park and are pootling up the mountain at the speed limit of 35 mph......or so we thought. All of a sudden up pops the ranger driving right up our bottoms so Garvo pulls over to let him pass. He pulls in behind with lights flashing which is never a good sign. He then informs us we have been speeding as the limit had change for a 100 metre section to 20mph. Great. Garvo had took the sign to be an advisory sign as there were bends in the road but apparently not. After half an hour of fannying about with Garvo's licence he returns to inform us that he is issuing a ticket. Great. We plead our innocence but he is a jobsworth so gives the ticket anyway but does say that we don't really have to pay it as it will never be chased up. Good job because we weren't going to anyway - $120 - tskkk. We get to the top of the mountain and still can't see anything which is not good news for us. We head out for a walk to look at the Nisqually glacier which is just about visible before heading back to the car to make our exit as the cloud is showing no signs of lifting. Just as we are about to leave we turn around to see that the mountain has suddenly appeared and looks pretty spectacular. We grab some great photos before hitting the road back to Seattle. We find a great hostel right in the centre and head out for a wander and some more great food. That night we visit another brewpub, Pike brewery and sample a couple of their beers before calling it a night.
