Day 71 - August 21st 2007 - Road Trip Day 2
So, after an uncomfortable nights sleep we fall out of the car at about 9am and find ourselves still in the mist with not a hope of seeing the summit. We had planned to do some mountain biking on the mountain but rule it out because as well as not being able to see, it is freezing! We instead drop down into the Strathcona national park and opt for a short loop walk which is about our level of walking as we both recover from the West Coast Trail. We then decide to head on up the east coast with a lunch stop planned in Campbell River. We have a nice walk along the 'prom', scoffing blackberries on the way which seem to grow all over this island. We then find a place for lunch before heading up to Elk Falls to have another stroll on a short loop. It is salmon season and we see them battling their way up stream - silly salmon, looks like hard work to me. There are plenty of people out trying to catch them but they don't seem to be having much luck.
With the weather still not cracking the flags, we decide to head to the most northerly point of our trip that night, Telegraph Cove. This involves a 200km drive from Campbell River but the scenery on the drive is pretty amazing. On the way we manage to get a cracked windscreen as a flying rock smashes into us - good job we took the insurance out! We decide to head to Port McNeil first to see if we can get some stuff for dinner as Telegraph Cove is in the middle of nowhere. As it turns out, Port McNeil is also in the middle of nowhere with a supermarket, Chinese and a pizza place. After visiting the latter two, leaving them both feeling slightly nauseous, we opt for the supermarket and good old crisp sandwiches with the perfect accompaniment of tomatoes. We also stop at the off license and pick up some beers - happy days.
We then head out to Telegraph Cove and we find we were right to think there would be nothing there. We park up on a building sight with an amazing view looking out across to the Canadian mainland and just sit with our beers and crisp sandwiches taking in the views. Again we have no where to stay to Hotel Accent it is. We park up and get our heads down only to be woken by a tap at the window when we are politely asked to move down to the car park in the 'village' as we are parked on someones land - boo.
