A busy morning helping Steph out at USTC is followed by a hectic afternoon at the Hill School sorting out balls and generally running all over the place. The good news is we got to zoom around in a golf buggy with Carly sitting on the back like a princess, although the unexpected doughnut nearly sends her flying off the back. We all head out for dinner in the evening before getting an early night and we definitely have a low tolerance for the Dutch since the incident with Kai and so we are not as sociable as normal. Carly has a disappointing end to the night, as despite dropping various hints to visit Walmart she is unable to get hold of a copy of Harry Potter.
Sunday brings a joyous end to a long day for Carly as she finally manages to get hold of a copy of Harry Potter - a welcomed escape from her early nightmare of lying on an red ants nest and discovering the little critters crawling all over her
Camp goes pretty well throughout the week although it is back to the same old same old routine of coach, eat and sleep. Thursday brings us happiness though as we finish at midday and then we have a 4 day break until we have to be back coaching. We head off back to Cherry Hill with Dre for our few days off but we may as well continue with the story on here!
Arriving back at Cherry Hill around 6pm on Thursday evening we decide to head out for nice food and a few beers after a week of rubbish camp food. We grab quick showers and then head out to a lovely restaurant called Cork. We meet up with a few of Dre's friends and sit down for dinner with Jackie, Ben, Siobhan, Bubba and Dre. There is a special set menu on that night celebrating South Jersey food - 4 courses for $30 and it looks delicious so we all give it a whirl. The food is tip top, especially after the week we have had and the monk fish wrapped in prosciutto is a favourite with everyone finishing with jalapenos creme brulee which plays mind games on the palate
After food we head to Dre's local, R-Macs, to carry on with the drinking. Garvo is extremely tired and Carly soon catches up after a couple of vodka and sprites, almost nodding off at the bar. The night is a good one meeting lots of Dre's friends and family. We even bump into Uncle Harry again who completely blanks us before he recognises the English accent - he is slightly tipsy after an afternoon of drinking but he provides good banter. Amy is again out and on good form and it is good to catch up with people including some Frenchies that are there celebrating a wedding.
Friday sees us getting a lie in after the late night, however Garvo wakes up very cranky after a night on the sofa which is far too short for him. We head out to Gerhard's cafe for lunch which does great sandwiches and just chill out, people watching and chatting as the weather is cracking and our faces also light up when the waitress offers us a chocolate cupcake. We then head round to Dre's parents to hang out in their pool and spend a very enjoyable afternoon messing about with Carly doing some good surfing on a lilo and Dre doing her best shark impressions.
We decide to have a bbq round at their house and decide on surf and turf and put on a feast of delicious steaks served up with snow crab legs, giant shrimps and jersey corn
Saturday brings about another glorious day. Carly and I head to the pool first thing to do some lengths as it has been far too long and we both enjoy it. We then head back to Dre's before heading out to a diner for brunch and enjoy the diner experience selecting hits from the tableside jukebox as old cougars prance around carrying plates of sunny side up eggs. Carly has a shocker as she orders the cinnamon toast thinking it would be like a raisin toast but it ends up being some rubbish toast sprinkled with cinnamon - not a good start to the day!
We then head up to Princeton to visit Dre's friend Kristen (she also runs Champions Edge camps along with her husband Matt - see Scranton camp). She has recently had a baby, Parker, who Andrea wants to steal. We spend an hour or so round there chatting before heading to Dre's cousins who has also just had a baby
We then head back to Cherry Hill for a cheeky early evening beverage at Kaminski's before heading to Dre's favourite sushi place where we have a lovely meal. We decide to head into the city as Dre's cousin is getting married and it is her hen (bachelorette) party that night and Dre can't make the wedding.
We make it into town for about 10ish (everything seems to happen later over here) and head to a couple of bars to meet various people. We meet up with some other English lads who are out coaching footy and they seem to have got the juke box under control with some cracking music. We then head to meet up with Amy and Dre's cousin and find them in a pool bar. They soon move on leaving myself, Carly and Amy in the pool bar playing darts and monopolise the juke box. We have a few beers before closing time at 2am. We then head back to the Hill School and wind up in bed just before 4am.
We have the Sunday off again so borrow Dre's car to head to King of Prussia to the shopping mall. The weather is pretty grim so it is packed but we manage to pick up some new items of clothing and enjoy a change of scenery
We make it back in time for the arrival of some new campers and the start of another week of coaching. The week flies by quite quickly surprisingly, however we start to crave proper food and we are getting pretty sick of camp food.
Wednesday night soon comes around and we decide to head to the bar for a couple of wind down beverages and mainly the opportunity to get off campus and into the real world. After pizza and beer we venture into the bar where karaoke is again taking place with the usual suspects all up on stage. We are introduced to a new drinking game called quarters (rather similar to our game of touch the cup but played with multiple cups) which provides a good source of entertainment. We find out the next morning that the Dutchies did a spot of furniture removal on their way home leaving a trail of destruction from the bar all the way back to the dorm.
Another Thursday finish but only one day off before the next batch arrives. Thursday afternoon turns into a good one however as we head to the pitch and putt for a mini Ryder Cup.
With a good mix of American and European coaches, we manage to sort out two teams for a fierce battle over 9 holes that goes down to the wire with Europe triumphing by one shot and claiming the prize of ice creams all round
We head to the local bar for some appetisers and enjoy some leisurely Blue Moons before the games break out. A favourite from the previous night, quarters returns . That is the staple game for the evening and it gets quite competitive as we team up again. A top afternoon and evening all round.
Our day off falls on a Friday and the weather is roasting hot so we decide on a trip to the shops and then on to the cinema. We opt for the Simpsons Movie which leaves us disappointed (to all you Simpsons fans out there - it is a big let down!). We grab a spot of lunch before heading back to the golf place for a couple of rounds of crazy golf at which Carly kicks my bottom......twice. We also return to the batting cage to take out some of our anger. We unfortunately make it back in time for dinner and the start of our final week of work for a long time....yippee.
So, camp finally comes to the end of what has been a very long 6 weeks in which we have probably dealt with well in excess of 2000 American teenage girls. We need to take the next 6 months off just to recover from that
" Do you sing in English or do people use an American accent?"
" Do you use dollars in England?"
" Oh, you come from England, you must be good at French"
" Is England the capital of London?"
" Do you have ice cream in England?"
To a Dutch player when he said he was from the Netherlands, " Is that where Peter Pan comes from?"
" Have you ever met Posh Spice?"
So you can see what we have been dealing with here - it's not all fun and games.
We move on to Canada this Friday after a couple of days back with the Grasso family and the beginning of the next part of the adventure. Keep reading.........
