Show trip route
After arriving at Steph's the previous evening, we enjoy a good nights sleep in a double bed. Steph has a lovely townhouse in a small town called Parkesburg, around 5 miles from Downingtown. Parkeburg has certainly felt the impact of Walmart as the town now only has a petrol station, post office, dollar store, 4 hairdressers and a tatoo palour. Carly get up early for a run before we all head to the shopping outlet in Lancaster. Carly manages to spend her birthday money on a new bikini (thanks Geoff and Judith) and we also pick up some new aviators from Fossil as well as a couple of other bits and bats.
We then head for some lunch and have some sushi and fresh spring rolls before heading to Steph's work to see where we will be working all next week
Steph cooks us up a lovely pasta dinner before the three of us head out leaving Kai to look after Casey (Steph's lovely puggle dog) as he is too young to come to the bar. Shame. We head into West Chester as it is one of Steph's friends birthdays. Steph selects the parking lot as she has just bought a new beast of a car and has not mustered up the courage to tackle reverse parking yet. It is a good night as we have a few beers getting home at about 2am.
Day 34 - 14th July 2007
Again it is an early start for us as the rays of death come through the window nice and early. We head out for a nice walk to investigate the local area which turns into a 2 hour wander down all sorts of backroads. We come back and head out to Walmart as Steph is having people over for a bbq that evening. We also have to make a trip to a beer shop and a liquor store as supermarkets are not permitted to sell either and the beer store cannot sell liquor - where is the logic in that I ask you??
Anyway, we head back to the house and Carly and I head off to play some frisbee and throw a ball around before heading back for showers
We then set up a game of beer pong, a very popular drinking game over here which is great fun. I am partnered with Ed who assures me we will be fine as he has played lots of times before and it is my debut. Needless to say I land 5 of the first 6 I throw and he ends up contributing one ball in 4 games. Cheers Ed. Carly also gets involved and is a decent player although I regret offering to drink her share as well as we are on Miller Lite which is not a very pleasant beer.
The Wii then gets set up so there is plenty of tennis action. Carly's style and panache shines through against boring Kai as she really gets involved. Carly and I then have a boxing match and just throw punches and get nearer and nearer to the screen until we are told to back away! Carly gives me a good beating though not for the first time on this trip.
Day 35 - 15th July 2007
Another early start so we head out for a walk again as the weather is beautiful. We take some photos before heading back. Carly is suffering Wii arm today so is not up for any sort of rematch or frisbee action. We head over to Steph's Mums place in the afternoon as she has a pool on her complex so we have a dip as the temperature is soaring today. Jeremy, Sheila and Owen have also come round so we mess about in the pool before Jeremy introduces us to a game called wiffle ball - a bit like baseball but played with a plastic ball that swings in the air.
We leave in the early evening as Steph runs a local league in West Chester so we head out there to make sure everything runs smoothly. We get roped into a game of 7v7 which is so tiring in the heat. Kai goes further off the scale as he plays at full pelt against young girls, even managing to drag flick a short corner. Muppet. We get back late that night and stop at Walmart to pick up some soup before a very late dinner.
Day 36 - 16th July 2007 - Scabies Day - the Re-run
An early start for us all today as it is the first day of camp
Unbelievably he has not finished there as he asks for the Wii to be set up before he goes. This is met with a resounding no as he is told to sit and think about what he has done.
We head to camp itching all over but get the first day done without any further hitches. We have an ice cream treat afterwards before helping Steph out in the office. She has been in touch wth a few people she knows about scabies however he has to wait until tomorrow for a doctors appointment.
We head back that evening to let him know before the three of us go out for tea to a local diner. Carly has a nice BLT and then we go back to USTC (work!) as Steph runs another hockey league there and needs to speak to someone. We get back late and start the first set of washing going as we need to wash everything we own
Day 37 - 17th July 2007
Another day at camp and some more itching. Steph has to run around after Kai all day dropping him off at the clinic and picking him up again so we help out int he office with last minute things for Eastern camp next week. We also meet up with Judy and have a good catch up. She used to run the camp but has recently sold it to USTC.
We get home and let Kai know that we are going to ship him off to Dre's sister if she will take him the next day as he will not be working at the camp all week as he definitely has scabies and the doctor will not allow him to work until next Monday. After speaking to Elizabeth and then to her parents, it seems that no one wants to take him. Quel surprise.
That evening we head to West Chester for food and to get out of the scaby house. We go to a lovely bar that specialises in seafood so we go for a crab bruschetta appetiser and Carly goes for a Shrimp salad and I have fish and chips, a taste of home although not quite as good.
Day 38 - 18th July 2007
After another long day at camp we head back to the house to let Kai know we are shipping him out. He already has all his stuff packed and manages to change his flight home for the next day. We are heading into the city that evening for hockey so we drop him at a Motel 6 near the airport on our way. There were certainly no tears as we watched him walk away tahts for sure. We head to Drexel University to watch Steph play hockey that evening and also meet up with Dre who flew in from Brazil in the afternoon. She cannot believe all that has goone on in the last week.
Garvo's paranoia sets in with the itching which leads to an inspection of his bottom at the side of the field. Thankfully there was nothing to report. We head back home calling at Walmart on the way to pick up lice shampoo and spray to give us all some peace of mind. The shampoo comes with a seizure warning if we use too much. Better be careful then.
Day 39 - 19th July 2007 - No Kai Day!
After an early morning bottom inspection, we head out for our penultimate day at camp in schorching hot weather. The girls get to go on a water slide as part of their camp so a nice easy day for us. We finish and head for an ice cream and some putt putt (crazy golf to those in the know) with Ryan and Hodge. We just make it round before a heavy downpour and Ryan almost sets the course record before bottling it on the last.
That night we head to King of Prussia for dinner at Jeremy and Sheila's. They cook up a storm, amking us meatballs and pasta followed by two desserts (Bogo heaven!) - a lemon merangue and a Boston pie. The meal is accompanied by a bottle of vino and a few beers so all in all a fantastic evening. Jeremy who has just finished serving in the American army tells us some of his tales of his time over in Iraq. We are joined after dinner for drinks by Steph's Aunt and Uncle, also known as Gamy and Gus. We have a toast at 6.40pm as Kai's plane leaves the country taking him and his scabies back to Holland.
Day 40 - 20th July 2007
A very early start for us today as Steph drops us off at work for 7:30am so we try our hand at lacrosse before the rug rats arrive
We decide to make the walk to Walmart and negociate walking on the hard shoulder as the fat Americans fail to put any pavements in. We pass 5 churches on the way and I am now beginnning to realise why the town has no bar. We make it back to the house and decide to cook up a storm of our own - traditional cottage pie. We do a pretty good job job considering they have rubbish gravy out here and we even manage to get a sit down for the an hour for the first time this week.
Steph finally makes it home after a tough day and she is pleased to smell our delicious cooking. We also picked up some freshly picked sweetcorn from the farm shop which goes down a treat as the starter. The cottage pie is good and we follow it up with a home made brownie cake.
That evening we decide we need to get out of the house and have an unwind, despite everyone being knackered. We head out into West Chester and end up in Barnaby's where Blue Moon is again on offer - result. We meet up with Matt and Hodge and Deanna and it turns into a top night out. We manage a couple of shots which were pretty potent - the shots are great out here as they have no measures so they just keep pouring.
We end up getting in at 3am and sleep very well.
