Show trip route
So after yesterdays day from hell, we awake to an overcast first day in Cherry Hill but at least the torrential downpouring has stopped. We have a bit of a lie in (for us!) and have a nice relaxing morning, enjoying our first proper breakfast of cereal, fruit and poached eggs on toast since arriving in the States.
We then decide to head out to the supermarket to pick up some supplies for the next week as it is nice to be able to cook up some good food and not rely on eating out where the food is full of salt, sugar but mainly fat! We pick up some supplies and head back to the flat where we cook up a beanie special (recipe courtesy of Mrs Hirst) with some fresh veg which is a rarity over here. Carly manages to fit in a swim before dinner as Andrea's complex has a pool, gym ,sauna and hot tub for the residents to use - back of the net
We then decide on the cinema that evening as there are lots of new releases out at the moment. We opt for Live Free or Die Hard as it was at the best time but it turns out to be a pretty good film with the yanks actually taking the micky out of themselves for a change.
An earlyish night follows as we are knackered from 4 days down at the beach.
Day 20 - June 30th 2007 - Big Geoff's 61st Birthday
An early start for Garvo and Carly as we take full advantage of the swimming pool and get some lengths in before breakfast. We then head out to Dre's parents as she has to pick up her new phone after losing it in the Virginia Beach drunken debacle. From here we decide to take a trip into Philly as we have never really taken the tour.
Dre takes us to a food market before heading to South Street and the more eccentric side of the city. We manage to find a nice bar to have a bite to eat and even manage to resist an afternoon beverage, despite the sunny weather
We then head back to Cherry Hill for another nice dinner, followed up with a trip to an ice cream parlour in nearby Haddonfield which turns out to be an absolute jaffer. We head back thoroughly stuffed to watch a dvd we had picked up earlier. We opt for the Good Shepherd which turns out to be a big error as it is 2 hours and 48 minutes of the biggest dross we have ever had the mispleasure of watching. Carly and I fall asleep on a number of occassions, however Dre hacks it out and is still none the wiser come the end of the film.
Day 21 - July 1st 2007
Another early start as we are getting into the routine of a swim before breakfast. The weather is once again glorious and we decide to take a chance and head to the baseball to try and get some tickets at the gates. After a debacle of a journey to get to the ground, we manage to bag some tickets for $16 each which is ridiculously cheap. Philladelphia has all its sports grounds set up in the same area with baseball, football, ice hockey and basketball all within 5 minutes of each other
We head for a pre game drink in a bar next to the stadium and take some photos of the impressive stadiums. We then head into the ground to find our seats up in the 'nose bleeds'. The Phillies have been on a pretty poor run of form however the gorund was still pretty much a sell out with close to 50 000 attending. Our seats have a cracking view despite being high up and we sit down to enjoy the game. Being at the baseball, we obviously couldn't miss out on a hot dog with all the trimmings with ketchup and mustard.
The game is reasonable although fairly low scoring with the Phillies beating the New York Mets 5 to 3. We head back out to Haddonfield where we call in at Dre's parents for dinner. We are treated to a fantastic bbq with Carly and I opting for some delicious tuna steaks which were ridiculously cheap. Dre's Mum also makes some homemade pesto with ingredients picked fresh from the garden which goes down a treat. We enjoy a couple of early evening beers with Dre's Dad and sit back and enjoy the sun.
Later we head back to watch another dvd, this time picking a much better film, Little Miss Sunshine which keeps us all amused
Day 22 - July 2nd 2007
An early start for us today as Dre is back into work so we have the day to ourselves. We stroll into the town of Haddonfield to post some postcards and letters and have an amble around the shops. We pick up some tennis balls so we can replicate Wimbledon, without the rain, back at Dre's place. We spend the afternoon around the pool after playing out an epic 5 setter at tennis and swimming 100 lengths. We also devour half a watermelon which was ridiculously cheap from the supermarket.
In the evening we head out to Dre's local bar and former place of employment, Kaminski's for a few beverages - $2 Corona's so couldn't grumble. We come back and watch Notes on a Scandal which is a truly bizarre film!
Day 23 - July 3rd 2007
Walk from hell day! We decide it is a good day to go and have a game of pitch and putt as there is a course not too far away. We head off in high spirits with the sun beating down and not a care in the world
The walk back is not much better however we make room for a frozen ice stop at Rita's which keeps us going. We come back and have lunch by the pool - more watermelon and a bit more tennis as well.
In the evening we head out for some tea at the local sandwhich shop, The Bread Board. The sandwiches are ridiculously filled with Carly having enough tuna salad to make sandwiches for a week. We then decide to head to the cinema to see Knocked Up which is a very funny film which I would recommend to you all back home.
Day 24 - 4th July 2007 - American Independence Day (or as we like to say, the day we gave you your country back!)
We get up for an early morning swim and complete our 100 lengths which have now become part of our daily routine. We then head out to the supermarket to pick up supplies for a bbq that evening round at Dre's parents house
A chilled out afternoon follows before we head over to Dre's parents for the bbq. Some of the Grasso clan are round and we get to meet Uncle Harry and his neighbour as well as Grandpa Grasso so a good time was had by all. The food on the bbq also goes down a treat with some more home made pesto making it onto the menu as well as Harry's home made beans which were delicious.
We enjoy some leisurely Blue Moons and Corona's and sit out chatting all afternoon. Dessert was an interesting concoxion called Dirt Pie. It was served in a bucket using traditional spades from the beach and was a bit of a gooey mess but tasted delicious - there were also home made brownies which were also fantastic.
In the evening we head out to watch some fireworks over the city but we are held up by a massive thunderstorm with the streets flooding. We decide to head into the city to meet up with one of Dre's old friends from college who has just got a flat right in the city. He comes to pick us up and nearly kills us on the way into the city as we hit a big puddle and aqua plane all over the show!
We spend the rest of the evening having a few beers and playing peanut racing as Dre and Dave get reaquainted as Carly and Garvo feel like gooseberries
Day 26 - 6th July 2007
A very early start this morning as we head up to Villanova to help Dre and Joannie set up the final bits and pieces. We spend the morning bezzing round in golf buggies setting up ball buckets and the camps store.
We then head into Villanova for lunch which Joannie very kindly treats us to. We have some great nachos for a starter then Garvo has a delicious fresh tuna steak burger and Carly opts for a grilled shrimp and spinach salad.
We then head off to the airport to pick up another coach, Kai who is flying in from Holland. After waiting around for an hour he fianlly makes it through with enough luggage to sink the Titanic. We manage to squeeze everything and everyone into Dre's jeep and head back to Cherry Hill where we go for a swim as it is a hot day.
That evening we head out to Kaminski's and have yet more nachos. Dre and Kai decide to head to meet Dave in the city but Carly and I opt to stay at the bar talking to the locals and having a few cocktails which go down a treat. We get in and watch the Phillies lose a tense game against Colorado.
