Day 22: Cirque Du Soleil Is a Sight To Be Seen
Entry 35 of 42 | show all | print this entry |
I was up at 10:30 and read "Gone With the Wind" for a while. We were leaving in less than a week and I was very, very sad. As upbeat and fun as I always try to be, I'm more of a "glass is half empty" kind of girl. Instead of thinking "Wow, we've been here for three weeks and we still have a week left!" I was thinking, "Where did the time go? We only have a few days left..." I actually got so upset that I got out our AAA Pet Book and started to look for places to stay on our next year's vacation. I didn't even know where we were going, and the book only listed hotels, so it didn't really help. I worked on my trip report notes and took a shower at 12:00 before getting ready. At 1:30 I listened to Disney music on my MP3 player and hung out in my room for a little while. I then went downstairs and had a waffle for lunch and watched the Yankee game. Afterwards I watched some video from the day before on our video camera. At 3:15 I took some more trip report notes and read more of "Gone With the Wind." It was a very relaxing afternoon.
At 5:30 we ordered the 5-5-5 deal from Domino's again. We ordered a mushroom pie, a pineapple pie, and a plain pie but instead of plain they brought us sausage. We didn't feel like sending it back, though, so we just ate the sausage. Whoever didn't want it could just take it off. The pineapple was absolutely delicious, I love pineapple pizza! When we were done eating I read some more of "Gone With the Wind" in my room before getting ready to leave. At 7:30 we left for Downtown Disney. Cirque Du Soleil didn't start until 9:00, but after our parking fiasco the last Saturday night we didn't want to have to fight for a spot. There was no traffic whatsoever, and when we got to the West Side parking lot at 7:50 there were tons of spots. We parked and decided to walk around for a while.
We walked around the West Side and the area wasn't too crowded, which was nice. They had the biggest, most delicious looking caramel apples in the window of the candy store and mom wanted one, so we decided that we would come back after the show. We went over to the bathrooms right under the Cirque theater and it was pretty crowded, but we were in and out within five minutes. We looked in the gift shop and I loved the masks but they were all so expensive. Some of them were as much as $1000... for a mask. They were definitely pretty, though. The DVD of the show was selling for $37 and I wanted it, but I decided to skip it. I knew that they always showed Cirque Du Soleil specials on Bravo, Pay Per View, and the HD channel, and I was pretty sure that I'd be able to find it on Netflix, anyway. $37 just seemed like a lot of money for a DVD.
We got on the short line to enter the theater at 8:30, and we were seated within ten minutes. We had awesome seats! We were right on the left side of the theater, one level up from the floor. They were category 3 seats and I couldn't imagine why anyone would pay so much more money for category 1 seats in such a small theater. We wouldn't want to be on the floor, anyway, since most of the show takes place in the air. The only problem was that the seats were really small. Dad was sitting on the inside next to another guy and he could hardly move his legs. Mom was on the aisle and offered to switch with him but he said he was fine.
A vendor came around selling popcorn in a Cirque Du Soleil bucket which mom bought. The popcorn was really good. The bucket was cute but we ended up giving it to Alison to play with in the bath. Mom and dad went to get drinks while Mike and I hung out. A few minutes before the show started the two main clowns came out on stage and put on a little show. They had a big tower of boxes that they were carrying around, and at one point they fell and one hit a guy in the front row on the head! He definitely looked surprised. Then a guy in his twenties ran down from the upper level seating and ran onto the stage, pretended to squeeze his nose and made a honking sound, ran around the confused looking clowns, and then ran back up to his seat while everyone clapped. Yea, I wouldn't doubt that he and his friends had been drinking right before they showed up. It was definitely weird but hysterical!
The show started a little after 9:00, and wow... I was completely blown away. We've seen a lot of shows like this but on a much smaller scale. Everything was just absolutely amazing. All of the acts were just like in the Ringling Brother's circus which we've seen so many times, but much more theatrical. I didn't realize until the end that the people walking back and forth on the stage all in the similar outfits were the different people performing in the show. I loved how all of the music was live, there was no soundtrack. I loved the music during the tightrope part of the show, when the girl sang in French. It was all very new-age and spiritual in a way... very beautiful.
The Chinese acrobats were incredible, I can't believe how young they were. They definitely got the loudest applause of the night. They're some talented little girls! The BMX part of the show was also very cool and without a doubt Mike's favorite. I also loved the trampoline act, and the guy who swung around on the red silk had the most amazing body... you have to be strong to be able to do that! The trapeze show was cool, but it was just like in every other show. When Cirque Du Soleil was over, dad, the one who was the most skeptical about going, started the standing ovation. We all really loved it!
We left the theater and after having been so completely blown away by the show, I had to get the DVD. I went into the gift shop but it was packed, so I went to a small vendor who was selling it right outside. I just really hoped that it wasn't available on Netflix, because $40 is a lot of money for a DVD. I kind of regret buying it now since I haven't watched it since, but I'm sure I will eventually. Without having been able to take pictures, the DVD is a good memory. I urge all of you to SEE THIS SHOW! I know everyone says that Cirque Du Soleil will exceed all of your expectations, but it really, truly will. It's incredible!
Mom no longer wanted her caramel apple so we headed out to the parking lot. We were surprised to see that at 11:00 on a Saturday night there were so many empty spots. Maybe last Saturday was just some freak occurance, but it had been unbelievably packed then and now it was pretty empty. We were hungry and wanted to go for ice cream at a Friendly's-type place. We didn't want to go back to IHOP after all of the trouble they had put us through last time, though, and the closest Friendly's was twenty minutes away so we decided to just go back to the condo. When we got back mom went to bed while Dad, Mike, and I watched "Can't Hardly Wait" on TV, and then some of the Cirque Du Soleil DVD. I was really hoping that the special features would be good since the HBO show on the making of one of the versions of Cirque Du Soleil was really interesting and I loved seeing how it all came together. There weren't many special features, though, and I was pretty disappointed but it's still something cool to have.
I went up to bed at 2:00 and read in my room for a while before drifting off to sleep at 2:30. It had been a relaxing and very fun day.
