My friend Glenn, who I have known since High School, is currently a Television Production major at St. John's University in Queens, New York. He hopes do work in the TV industry after he graduates, and he's always up for a peek of the true industry behind the scenes. For the longest time I had promised Glenn that he could come up to NBC with us for my dad to give him a private tour but it never came to be. This week he was on spring break and both me and my friend (and boyfriend at the time) Matt were off on Friday's so we all decided to spend the day in the city.
Glenn met me at my house early that morning and we took the bus to the train station where we met Matt. We took the train into the city and met my dad at NBC. We had a complete tour of the studios and building and had a ton of fun taking as many pictures as possible. When we were done in NBC we walked around Times Square for a while and then ate at Ellen's Stardust Diner, one of my favorite restaurants. It's set up like an old 50's diner where scenes from classic musicals are projected onto a large screen and the waiters and waitresses all take turns singing Broadway show tunes and fun fifties songs to everyone in the restaurant.
When we were done eating we walked over to Toys R Us Times Square and went on the ferris wheel! I had been wanting to go on the ferris wheel for the longest time so it was definitely a lot of fun. Then we walked around the store and took some pictures before walking around Times Square a little more and then making our way back to Rockefeller Plaza. We were going to take the train back to Brooklyn with my dad, but he couldn't leave for another hour so we just hung out by the skating rink and looked in some of the stores in the basement of Rockefeller Center. Then I realized that we could go up to the Top of the Rock, the observation deck on top of the GE building. We called my dad and he came down to get us a $2 discount on each ticket. The tickets were $25 each so the discount wasn't much, but it was something.
Matt, Glenn and I made our way up to the Top of the Rock and it was absolutely amazing! We were the only ones in the elevator on the way up and it was crazy. The walls were painted black and the ceiling was glass so all we could see was us shooting up towards the sky. There were also images being projected onto the ceiling showing us the most famous moments in Rockefeller Center history. It was a ton of fun! When we got to the observation deck there were three different levels - one surrounded by glass, one middle tier, and then the highest level that gave us a great view. It was dark out by then and the view of the city lit up in thousands of twinkling lights below us was breathtaking. It was so beautiful that we didn't even let the fact that it was only thirty-degrees out get to us!
It was a long and amazing day. I can honestly say that this was one of the most fun days I'd had in a while, and I can't wait to do something similar again soon. More thumbnails ...
