There is a 16hr time difference between New York and Sydney so please do not call me at 8pm Sydney time as it will be 4am here. I prefer you email me anyway as it costs money to receive calls on my mobile here.

So the trip to NY was long and took me about 22hrs to get here (including 3hrs queing up at LA airport to get through customs). I watched so many episodes of the Simpsons and Kath & Kim on the plane. I arrives at JFK airport at 6:20pm to a "warm" 5 degrees celcius.

I caught a taxi from JFK airport to my hotel. Despite what people say I haven't found the taxi drivers rude yet. Actually I haven't found any New Yorkers rude, actually quite helpful. They are loud though and love listening to there own voice. When I arrived at my hotel I was greeted to a room with a single bed with the wall about 1/2 metre away from the edges of the bed, plus a small bathroom. So its snug to say the least, and I'm a bit suprised that its US$300 a night, but hey it's in NY.

Feeling a bit hungry I went to McDonalds next door (there seems to be one on every block), but the burger was so aweful I only ate 1/2 of it. I then decided to have a short walk, which turned into about 1 1/2 hours because I got lost. I walked around 5th Ave and 34th St (around Macy's, which is huge). When the taxi drivers weren't honking at eachother, the NYPD sirens were going off somewhere in the city. At night it stinks as everyone leaves their garbage on the street. It was crowded and all the shops seem to be open till late every night. Its definately a shopping mecca with so many shops everywhere (even on all the sidewalks where people are selling fake brand name bags and sunglasses, the sidewalk stores are everywhere). The sales are really good with everything 30%-60% off. I was lloking for a coat and found a nice one for about AUD$1,800, even though I could get 40% off it was still out of my price range. I did find a coat for about AUD$350 less 60% off which I'm going to buy tonight.

Today I walked around New York for about 8hrs. I walked past the Empire State Building, 5th Avenue shops, Times Square, Broadway, Rockefeller centre, Central Park, United Nations Building, St Patricks Cathedral, Trumps Tower and many more. I plan to revisit them all as I didn't spend much time at anything, it was more of a walk to see where things were. There is so much to see here, with most being within walking distance. I'll post pictures on this site when I can.

Anyway happy New Years for tomorrow! I'm looking forward to going to Times Square tomorrow, and going to the Turtle Bay apartments where the other secondees are staying so that I can finally have some friends here (the apartments aren't available till the 1st January). It does get pretty lonely doing all this stuff by myself.

Coolest thing about NY: the round sewer grates on the road do actually have steam (or something) coming from them. I always thought it was just a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle myth. And as I mentioned the shops are awesome too.
Worst thing about NY: when it turns to a green man when you cross the road it doesn't beep. I never realised how much I realied on the beeping. I feel sorry for the blind people here.

Anyway love you all,
