Indiana University Dorm Room

Flag of United States  , Indiana
Thursday, June 7, 2012

Today we arose at 4:30am for a 5:00 am start, we needed this time to navigate the Chicago traffic, United Airlines strange check- in arrangements and the standard long weight at the security check. We boarded a very small plane at 7:00am, to Indianapolis and thence drive on to Bloomington with our trusty chauffeur, Mr. Thompson at the wheel of the van. Checked in at the university and were assigned our dorm rooms, very spartan. Mr. T., Mrs. M and Mr. K. are booked into the Hilton Gardens, much more to our liking but sadly not for us.

Cafeteria food, a lot of walking ( it's a big BIG campus ) and plenty of planning to get all the activities in. The memento exchange was a huge hit with lots if interesting memorabilia being swapped, our kangaroos go down a treat.  Memento exchange is an FPSPI tradition, there are so many here that there is a junior and a senior swap meet.  This is a wonderful event with all of the students, some obvioulsy well prepared, swapping and negotiating swaps enthusiastically.  This was a great "ice- breaker".

We get back to dorms for preparation for the Opening Ceremony.

7:30 rolls around and Nelson dressed in the Bondi outfit strides onto the stage with dignity, all the, Aussies (second biggest team) go wild, when the anthem is played all sing.

When the USA flag came out at the end the locals gave a classic American rendition of their anthem, it was really something to hear, students from year 5 up to 12, the coaches and even the guest speaker with hand on heart singing at full volume. We could learn something from that.

Though the classic "Aussie, aussie, Aussie, oi, oi, oi". Goes over pretty well too.
Usual opening ceremony type speeches afterward Mr. T. Mrs. M and Mr. K. go off to volunteer assignments and the team to choir practice. Coach goes looking for lost backpack.  Misplaced when Nelson stepped into Bondi garb.  Soon recovered, no damage done.

Bed at 11:00pm - all exhausted.

Mr Parnaby on

I've been keeping an "eye out" for your entries, comments and overviews. It appears lots have been cramped into your trip so far. Out of bed at 4:30am !! Well, I know the feeling ... I've been doing Year 7 reports in a similar manner. At school, all has been quiet with some strange weather that varies from day to day ... wet one, warmer the next ... colder the next etc. Hope all is well with you all and that Mr Thompson remembers to drive on the right side of the road ... literally. Looking forward to hearing how all things go at the conference and general chat. Start preparing your presentations for the whole school ... I think a few assemblies etc should be hearing about your adventures. Go Bossley !!
