So, after a wonderfully cosy ride in a sleeper car train, I've made it safe and sound to Chiang Mai. Along the way, I met a very nice fellow traveller from Ireland, named Brenden who I now seem to be spending my time with. As with anytime I've stepped off a train, bus or ferry, I was swarmed with taxi drivers, tuk tuk drivers, tour operators and guesthouse owners wanting my business. With the advice from my handy guidebook (which I use several times daily), I accepted a ride to the Libra guesthouse, and booked a room there for the night. After a refreshing hot shower, Brenden and I took to the streets by foot, exploring the old part of the city which is enclosed by a moat. Already, we've visited three wats (Buddhist tmeples), ate a delicious thai lunch and got lost in the winding, narrow backstreets. It's been a nice day.
I've already thought up some plans for the next few days. Tomorrow, I am taking an all day Thai cuisine cooking course, where I will learn how to make five authentic dishes. This also includes a trip to the market where we get to pick out our own food and of course, learn all about the ingredients. I'm really excited for this! Then, when I get home, I can make everyone a genuine Thai feast, right at home! Then, in the days after that, I'm thinking of going on either a two day or three day jungle trek. This would include mostly hiking, but also bamboo rafting and an elephant ride. (which I'm not exactly too keen on.) The tour boasts visits to a couple of hill tribe villages, along with wildlife sightings and frolicing in a waterfall. So it should be an interesting experience to say the least.
But until then, I think a visit to a night bazaar is in order tonight. The area is well know for it's textiles and silver jewlery, so I hope I don't end up spending too much! I have to remember that I have only a small pack and that I simply cannot carry everything home with me! Well, I suppose I could send a parcel home....

LoL! You'll run out of money before you know it ;)
Have fun shopping, and ridding that elephant! I heard they treat elephants there really well. I'm sure although you don't agree with it, you'll be giggling as it lifts you up and starts to walk..
Love you always,
Darren
