First night and day in Bangkok:
After four airports, hours of waiting and two days of travelling I have made safely into the heart of Bangkok. My internal clock will take a while to readjust and I've not had much sleep since I left. But that's alright. The excitement of this city will keep me going. We arrived late last night and after maneuvering the twisting overpasses, underpasses and tight lanes in this rickety taxi, we made it safely to our hostel. After showering and stowing out stuff, Lee and I took to the street to do some on-foot investigation. Even at 2 am, the streets were still busy with street vendors, buses full of people and cars whizzing by in evey direction. There seems to be stray dogs everywhere, howling at eachother into the night. As we walked, I noticed that most street corners have piles of garbage with large rats visiting them. The sidewalks are made of tile or brick and have many grates, from which cockroachs crawl. The street fronts are filled with shops with make-shift awnings that drip water on you if you're not careful. The puddles give you clues as to when to look out. All in all, a totally different world than I'm used to.
This morning, I spent some time watching the streetlife from a bench on the side of a busy street. The sceen is in constant motion. Cars, people and tons of motorcyles moving in every direction. Young Thai women are very fashionable and most wear gawdy highheels. Which I must give then credit for, what with all the grates and uneven sidewalks and all.
I don't know what's in store for the rest of the day. However, it is already sweltering hot and I'm not sure how anyone could walk around during the day at all. I think I have to get out there and start taking pictures though. :) Off I go!
