Our trip to Costa Rica started out much like out previous expeditions.  Hour upon hour in airports and planes.  I managed to load 3588 pieces of music on my mp3/movie player in the 40 min I had left before I took off for the airport.  So glad, as I have plenty of entertainment.  Too bad I didn't have time to put on a movie or two, although the airline played The Guardian, and as usual, the passengers were rather entertaining.
On arrival, we breeze through immigration and customs.  I highly recommend NOT checking baggage.  It made things much easier.  The exchange rate tight now is about 500 colones to 1 US dollar.  We find a an ATM and bathrooms, locate our ride (conveniently provided by our hostel), and we're off.  Riding in the car is reminiscent of Mexico.  The lines dividing the lanes are merely suggestions, as are stop lights.  Our guy drove with his hand on the brights to convey his annoyance to people who wouldn't get out of his way and also to let people know when he was running a red light.
It was dark when we got in so we didn't see much.  I did notice the above ground cemeteries, not unlike the "cities of the dead" in New Orleans.  The roads were also New Orleans-esque, dotted with litter and potholes.  It was like riding passenger in a video game as our driver swerved to miss the larger ones.  At one point he went down a road that had several roller coaster like hills with a similar effect on my stomach.  Gwyn and I squealed and giggled.  There was a silent horror from the 2 girls in the seat behind us.
When we got to the hostel we were assigned a room with the two passengers that had ridden with us.  They were girls from Sydney Australia.  We{d reserved our own room, but decided to go get food first.  Not much was open.  Il Pomodoro for Italian or some random Chinese restaurant.  We had Italian.  The bill came and I was amused to see that we owed over 9K.  Little money is such a pain.  After, we decided to walk around and see if we could find a market so Wende could buy a phone card and I could get a lighter.  After a few minutes, we we decide its probably not the smartest thing to mosey down this mostly deserted street.  Wende had hurt her knee before our trip so she was gimping along making us rather easy targets.  Mugging is not on our agenda.
Back at the hostel, we rectify the room situation, email friends and family, and head to bed.
