Where I stayed
Being creatures of habit our first mission for the day as always is to walk to the 4 Queens Hotel and Casino about 500 yards from our hotel and have a look at what shows are available at the half price ticket booth called Tix4tonight.
We have had very good luck with this ticket booth and there is rarely a line. There is a large television monitor at display the shows that are half-price for that evening. Five or six acts are listed in alphabetic order on each page. We watch the display from A-Z and start talking about which show we will see that evening. Carrot Top always seems to be available but Wifey does not care for his type of humor. The band Chicago is also in town for a gig at the MGM Grand and sure enough tickets to their show are half-price. We both like the band so there is our evenings entertainment planned and Wifey pays for the tickets.
Food is our next mission and we try to get into Binions Coffee Shop with no luck so we strike out North towards the Main Street Station Hotel where we try out their lunch buffet.
We are not foodies and pretty much anything that is well cooked and tastes good will satisfy us. The Main Street Station Garden Court buffet has a huge selection of food from sushi, Asian, Mexican, beef, chicken, fish you name the food and it will probably be there for the taking and always well prepared.
The area where the Garden Court Buffet is located is finely decorated and reminds one of what San Francisco would have looked like back around the turn of the century. The 1900's that is.
We've been to the Garden Court Buffet several times and always find the service excellent and the food to die for. Just like the Las Vegas experience in general the Garden Court Buffet never disappoints.
Sated and content we waddled back toward the Plaza Hotel where another slow read of the Las Vegas Journal Review and a nap are next on our agenda.
I read the paper while Wifey reads a novel and we doze a bit to allow some of our buffet to digest. Feeling refreshed I put on my workout clothes and go downstairs to the small exercise room for a workout. The exercise room is by no means large nor does it have a variety of equipment but there are weight machines for strength training and a couple of treadmills and a stairclimber machine for a cardio workout. There is a TV set in the room and I think it's a great perk when you only pay 35-50 dollars a night for the room.
After our workout we go out on to the roof where the swimming pool is located and sun bath and take a dip in the heated pool. During the summer months the bar near the pool is open and you can also rent a cabana. If you are going to sunbath at the Plaza pool you should probably do it in the morning or around noon as the South tower of the hotel casts a shadow over the pool as the sun makes it way across the sky later in the day.
We then go upstairs to room to prepare for the evenings entertainment the band "Chicago" at the MGM Grand. We leave the Plaza and walk North on Main Street past the Las Vegas Club and California and make a right Ogden Street and go to the Downtown Transit Center (DTC) to catch the bus nicknamed the "Deuce" that runs the Las Vegas Boulevard from downtown to the South end of the "Strip." We go to the DTC because there is always a bus ready to depart and we have always gotten the coveted front seat on the top deck of the bus that gives eye popping views of Las Vegas casinos and hotels. The DTC has many types of people using the facility and I might be a bit wary about going there after the sun goes down. The bus is clean and air conditioned but during certain times of the day it can take a long time to move from downtown to the strip but if you get the front seat you can't beat the view.
We get off the bus at NYNY and make our way across the pedestrian bridge that spans the "Strip" where there is always a good photo opportunity and go into the MGM. We find the ticket booth where we exchange our half-price vouchers for concert tickets then make our way to Starbucks for a grande cappuccino.
The Chicago concert is not going to start for a couple of hours so we head towards the sports book which is our normal entertainment to kill some time before a show. Wifey and I usually will put a few bucks on the horse races in the sports book but this time there is a Monday Night Football game on and it is being broadcast on one of those awesome high definition large screen televisions so we find a couple of seats and enjoy the first half of the game.
Monday Night Football
Wow that was a long day
