Laos is absolutely beautiful. It's what Thailand should be. Lots of rural areas, terraced rice fields and tiny villages. It's less crowded and much less touristy. I'm so happy that I came here, I wish I had more time to see the southern region and then Cambodia and Vietnam. It'll have to be next trip!
Had another great conversation with a monk. There is a giant wat (temple) on a hill called that Phu Si in the middle of this town. The city is very pretty with great views at the top of the hill. Met an English guy, a taiwanese woman and a woman named sarah, I think she was Dutch. Hired a jumbo or a songthaw in thailand or a small pickup with seats in the back to take us to the Sai waterfall. That meant a jumbo to a river. Hire someone to boat us to the actual waterfall. Then pay admission to the waterfall. It was lovely and worth the trip. As it turned out, not only could you swim in the falls but there were 4 elephants. I have a thing about animals. I always worry that they're not happy. Especially because there are so many tours that say crazy things like "hug a tiger!". But I was reading up and there are so few wild elephants that those that do exist need to be supported by tourist dollars in order to be well maintained and even exist. SO I spent some cash 20,000 kip, around 3 dollars and fed the elephants some bananas! I touched their tongue and handed a few off to them, most grabbed by their nose which is rough and hairy. I think they were a family.
