We are now in Cairns in Queensland Northern Australia after completing our cruise on the great barrier reef from Townsville. The weather was mixed with some cloudy days, a bit of rain and some strong winds but never below 28 degrees C. We did have some sunshine and the weather was generally nice during the daytime. We also had some big swells! (Lucky Ava) and we had to miss breakfast twice - because it was it was a bit dodgy tummy wise, but in general we had a fantastic time. We both snorkeled on the reef and John managed to get two Scuba dives done, the sea temperature is 27 degrees C so very comfortable. The food onboard was lovely 15 stone here we come! we were invited one evening to have dinner with the Captain so we had to be on our best Southern behavior no Northern stuff! (pie & mushy peas were out)We met some nice people on the way Anna & Al from USA and 9 girls from Oz travel in the UK who were the life and soul of the party. We stopped on a couple of islands on the way for some beaches and exploration and one day we had a barbecue on the beach where we had Kangeroo steaks. On the last day we moored at Thetford reef to feed the Giant Trevally (approx 3ft long) standing waste deep in the water, it was a dodgy time for any dangly bits! but thankfully we're still intact. This was also our second dive site (Nathan reef being the first). Now we are back on terra firma but we are still swaying every time we stand up, we hope it stops soon.

We are off to New Zealand on Sunday so we expect it to be much cooler there. We have our fleeces packed anyway. Should be some good pickies there.

Must go now we will try to update the web site when we can Ava & John

Checking up on you
Hi Ava John,

It's Bank Holiday Monday evening and thought we would catch up with you guys. The pictures just seem to get better as you go along (if that's possible). Did you talk Ava into scuba diving John? I am surprised you have time to keep the log updated with the speed at which you are moving, keep up the good work and enjoy.

Love Chris & Malc.

Your next holiday, John!
Hi you two.

Ava, why didn't you go scuba diving on the reef? Didn't you want to get your hair wet? Anyway John, I thought I'd keep you posted with regards to the train tickets for your next holiday.

I've had a partial, but expensive success with this. I'd spoken a couple of times over to the Scotrail telesales people over the past couple of weeks, as the release of the apex tickets for the sleeper was imminent, I was told last Saturday that today (Monday) would be the day. Sadly no!

Because the return leg of your trip home slips in to the 22nd July the ticket availability for that "should be in another week's time, sir" - so I'll try later in the week. Anyway I decided that I should book the tickets for mine and Darren's one way trip, sadly I'd missed the Apex ticket and had to pay the standard single fare - YIKES!! So instead of paying £69 each, they were £122 each. Bastards.

Right, I'm off -you both have a good holiday, and keep the pictures coming

g'day cobbers
Been looking at the photos they look great. I'm not jealous at all, and you know I'm telling lies too! Did you enjoy the diving? The reef looks great, did you see any sharks? Is that why Ava wasn't seen going in the water? I bet you're knackered arn't you? I bet you're looking forward to the cruise for a bit of R&R? Wigan lost yet again 54-12 against Hull, even with their new manager (Brian Noble from Bradford) but you're not bothered about that, so enjoy yourselves. Happy Birthdays and Anniversary, Lots of love Mum, Sandra, Neil, Neil Jnr, Lyndsey,Clare,Mark,Terry, Maria,Craig, Keighley, Scott,Becky, Auntie Josie, Uncle George and Auntie Annie. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

A message from down under !
I'm afraid I couldn't talk Ava into Scuba diving but she is now pretty proficient at snorkelling which is all you need to enjoy the Great Barrier Reef. We have good days and bad days with the internet update, the variety of computers and photo software varies a lot so we give up sometimes. How are the old gits getting on with their running. Is JR back in action yet?

Keep viewing the website

Re: from Jillc from sunny/rainy england
Hi I am glad you have been keeping up with the website and have enjoyed the photographs of the places we have seen. Hope you are not working too hard. We have found a bit of rain in New Zealand to make us feel at home.

Love Ava & John xx
