Kerry and I have travelled a fair bit in the past but have had a lull of 15 years since we last travelled seriously together. Yes our kids are now independent enough to be left behind.
As in the past we decided to organise our own trip - not so much because we love the work involved but rather we like the control we get (or think we get). We have not given organised tours a real go as yet, but we have the feeling that there is a major cost involved in time and flexibility. One day we will probably give them a serious trial - but not yet.
So this trip we used the internet a great deal to find good flights and accommodation. We both use the internet in our work and one of the goals was to be able to continue work maintenance as we travel. I expect to let you know how this goes.
In terms of organising flights we did actually revert to a travel agent - the internet sites we tried did not handle multi-point ticketing well, and we found the best fit - a Sydney - HK - Helsinki then return London - Sydney using Cathay / FinAir / Qantas through Flight Centre rather than online.
Accommodation was mainly started with a combination of www.hotelscombined.com.au and the Lonely Planet Guides (books).
Events were largely researched (and sometimes booked) online.
