I´ve spent the last few days in San Pedro de Atacama. It´s a little town crawling with backpackers. The town itself isn´t amazing, but is the jumping off point for many tours to the surrounding regions including the Atacama desert, thermal springs, geysers and the valley of the moon.
Yesterday I took an evening trip to the Valley of the moon (see photos). ´Today I visited the museum in town. It had displayed some amazingly well preserved artefacts including pottery and weavings, and bodies mummefied by the extreme dryness of the desert.
Tomorrow I will get up very early (3.30am) to visit the geysers at El Tatio. They are at 4500 metres, so I have left this until last to aclimatise, given my problems with altitude on the bus from Argentina. I have also been drinking plenty of ¨Matte de Coca¨¨, a tea made from coca leaves, which is supposed to ward off altitude sickness.
The day after tomorrow I will join a tour through the Salt plains, geysers and lagoons of Bolivia to Uyuni.
I´ll add the El Tatio photos tomorrow
