From Oslo I took the train to Myrdal, set high in the mountains. Even though the temperature was in the high twenties there was still snow on the ground in some places. At Myrdal we changed to another train, which descends steeply to the town of Flam, set on the fjord. The scenery was spectacular, so steep, with lots of impressive waterfalls
Now I am in Bergen, on the west coast of Norway. Absolutely delighted with the weather (it rains here an average of 274 days a year). Bergen is charming, with cobbled streets, and painted wooden buildings, on a background of mountains. I took the funicular up to mount Floyed, which gave a panoramic view over Bergen, then walked downhill back to the town through the forest with all the wildflowers in bloom, which was lovely. Bergen is also famous for its fish market, which was okay. Mostly, itęs just nice to walk around. It stays light here till about 11 pm, and there is lots of street performers and live music. I decided to take a ride on the ferris wheel right next to the harbour, which was okay until I moved and the cage I was in started to spin around, and I started to panic!
Tomorrow I will take the Hurtigruten boat up the coast, heading for the Lofoten islands and Tromso, in the arctic circle, which takes about 4 days. I will be sleeping on deck as cabins are a bit out of my budget, so I hope the weather stays fine.
