We got to the airport plenty early enough to park in the Blue Satellite parking lot and take the shuttle to the check-in area. Our flight didn't leave until 9:00 am. By 7:30 we were checking into Air Tran for the first time.
They did the usual thing, they weigh the bag. Ours came out to 48.5 lbs! Yay, we're under 50. As usual they put an extra tag on the bag to notify the workers that this is a big one. As if you could not tell by the size of the bag. We figured they would give us our slip and we'd be on our way. We were wrong.
Instead this terribly nice lady got a measuring tape out and started measuring our bag dimensions and mumbles something about 61". We had no idea why she was doing this. If the bag is under 50 lbs we have always been ok. Even if it comes out to just at 50 lbs we've still been ok on other airlines. According to her it came out to 63".. how convenient. We should have asked to measure ourselves so we could have showed her how the bag could be squished down more, but we were in shock! All the sudden she is telling us we are being charged an extra $39. This is on top of the $15 fee for the 1st checked bag. Let me point out that we are 2 passengers checking 1 bag. So what she's saying is that it would have actually been cheaper for us to check 2 smaller bags at $15 a piece. That would have been $30 in fees. Instead we decided to consolidate and use 1 larger bag, that is under 50 lbs!! and it is going to cost is $55???!~!?!
What does she say to us? "would you like to charge this fee".. Gee no, I want to leave my bag and all of my clothes in the airport!!! while i go on vacation. What a rip off! We have never ever had a problem with this suitcase before. Most other people notice that 2 passengers are checking this 1 bag... so it's actually less baggage overall going onto the plane.
This was worse than anything I've gone through on Southwest! Now I know why our tickets were so cheap.
Anyway, at 8:30 they started boarding the plane. When we were all on the plane they announced that our pilot was Captain Morgan! If only..
As we left Orlando I was able to take some cool photos. Beyond that it was a pretty uneventful 1.5 hours to Atlanta.
