When I arrived last night it was nearly 11 pm and dark, and I could see very little, so I was pleasantly surprised to walk out of my hotel room and take in the lush greenery and civilized landscape of my temporary home. My hotel is housed in what was once the former residence of the French Govenor of Indochina. It is a cream colored, linear, one story, modern architecture spot centered around a lovely modern saltwater pool.
I mosey over to the two storied colonial building that sits on a courtyard where I know my free breakfast will be served. I walk up the steps and practically have the place to myself, as most people head to Angkor Wat at the crack of dawn. I pick a spot on the large veranda overlooking both the courtyard and street, and my waiter let's me order one item from the cold menu and one item from the hot menu, and it's hard for me to choose because the menu sounds fantastic with both Asian and Western options.
As I sit there waiting for my granola and eggs Benedict to be served, I have a good chuckle to myself when the coffee I ordered shows up on my table as a lungo espresso of Illy coffee, work would be so pleased. I sit there, sipping my Illy, watching the scooters roll by at a breakneck pace across the courtyard, my freshly washed hair curling up around my neck in the humidity, aviators perched on the bridge of my nose, with Red Hot Chili Peppers playing on the restaurant's sound system, and I can't help but think to myself "Damn, I'm cool.". :P
