Hello Everyone,

We were both excited to see the sister city to the town of Ladysmith on Vancouver Island, where I (Audrey) grew up and went to school. I had known about this place since I was very young, but never in my wildest dreams thought I would be here someday.

We checked into a B&B which has to be on the top of the list of places we have stayed so far. It was set on beautiful grounds and had a million dollar hilltop view over the city. There were 3 different decks to choose from to sit and enjoy the view. We decided we didn't want to waste any of the view by going into town for supper, so we ordered some pizza and had a few drinks. We didn't move our butts from our chairs until the sun went down. This place is called Buller's Rest Lodge, a bit more expensive, but if you want to really treat yourself, go for it. It offers luxury accomodation with a very nice pool. It costs about half the price to stay here than what you would pay in North America. We were also served a delicious Spanish omelete in the morning.

The owners are very friendly. The husband happened to be a war history buff, and even had his own collection of war memorbilia set up in a room next to the bar.

He had heard of the town of Ladysmith on Vancouver Island and was keen to find out more about it. I unfortunately didn't have too much of the history to tell him. Of course being a child and teenager when I was there, I didn't care. I will find out and email him though. We are both curious as to how it got named Ladysmith. We assume a British person who was in the Boer war came and settled the area. I told him the names of the main streets in Ladysmith and he was very surprised, they were the same as the names in his town of Ladysmith. He told us most of them were names of generals in the Boer war. Some of the matching names were Buller, Symonds, Baden Powell and White street.

We drove around some of the city, it is much bigger than my Ladysmith. It did have a quaint downtown area that was somewhat similar in appearance. It was even complete with a Ladysmith Trading Company!!!!

You might know this town for a major claim to fame. The wonderful group Ladysmith Black Mambaza. We tried to buy a CD in 2 different shops, but they were all out. We will be sure to pick one up somewhere else.

See you in the next place. The beautiful Drakensburg area.
