Best hostel of the trip!
Entry 13 of 28 | show all | print this entry |
Of course we brought the bad weather with us to Italy. It rained the whole day for our first full day in the country. Despite the bad weather, we toured Napoli and ate at a famous pizzeria in town. Later that night we enjoyed a FREE dinner at our hostel and hung out for the night. From Napoli, we took a bus to Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius. Another bus took us up the mountain/volcano then we hiked the 15 minutes to the top of it. It was cloudy at the top so we could not see into the mouth besides the 10 minutes when a gust of wind blew the cloud away. It was still cool just to know the history behind the volcano, and the power it possesses. It felt like we were walking around on Mars or something because of the red sand and foggy weather. After that we toured the city of Pompeii. It was actually a much larger city than what we thought. It has an amphitheater that once fit 20,000 people, and it was used for gladiator battles. We also checked out some cool concert halls, preserved artwork, roman bathes, and, of course, the plaster casts of the people of Pompeii. It was incredible to see how well preserved the ancient city is and you begin to imagine what life was like back in the day. After that long day of walking around, we took a train to Sorrento. It is a beautiful town with a bunch of expensive shops, beautiful hotels, and the greatest hostel ever! It is called Mami Camilla and doubles as a cooking school. The cooking class makes a four course meal for the guests who purchase it, which we did the first night. It was some of the best food I have ever eaten, and I love to eat so that is saying a lot. (This is coming from Kyle by the way) Our meal was a Zuchinni appetizer, Lasagna, Pork Tenderloin (mouthwatering), and a lemon/strawberry) cake for desert. Evan and Aubrey are taking one of the classes right now then we are going to enjoy what they made later tonight. I will have them tell you about it next time. Hope as is well with everyone back home.

going strong (reply) Feb 25, 2008 09:30 EST by carolsolo
Looks like your still going strong. Well I did a Spanish tasting last week and tried to imagine myself in your shoes. The wines were great, the tapas just OK, the house was nice but no Spanish villa. The next night I picked up a carry out from Petra's on the way home from work but it didn't feel like Santorini. And now you're in Italy taking a cooking class, my dream vacation. UGH I am sitting her... show all

Kyle, great to hear you're eating well, I know that is high on your priority list...and having someone else cook...even better! I hope the weather jinx leaves the 3 of you and it's sunny skies from here on out. Miss you.
