Sometimes you just have to do the tacky tourist thing and did I find just that here at Lake Titicaca on the Peruvian side.   Indigenous people live just offshore on 44 or so floating islands called Uros and they have turned their native homes into a mecca where eager foreigners can let the Soles fly out of their wallets.   The boat trip is cheap enough at about $5 roundtrip and visits to two islands.

These islands really do float and really are manmade from reeds growing around Puna.    The small neighborhoods are anchored so the inhabitants don't float away in the dark of night.   I ended up visiting this tourist trap with two really nice Dutch sisters I met in Puna, and we actually did have a great time being just those very people we would normally laugh at.

We even paid an extra three bucks to ride in a traditional reed boat from one island to the next.   Yes, touristy for sure but how often does anyone get the chance to visit Lake Titicaca?   Shortly after returning from the islands the three of us caught the bus over the border to Copacabana, Bolivia.   The painless three hour drive along the lakeshore dumped us off on the edge of town and after getting our bearings, we made it to the hotel.

In the morning I am taking the ferry boat to Isla del Sol which is supposed to be an amazing island offshore.  This one isn't a manmade's a legit natural one with beaches, clear cold water, and hills.  Many people I have talked to said it reminds them of a Greek Isle.  I will take their word on that since I have never been on a Greek Isle, but nonetheless I am looking forward to hiking around the place.   After all day on the island I am taking a bus around dinnertime to La Paz.

How can anyone not like a place named Titicaca!
