Aerosaab charges $654.90 one way for the use of a Cessna single engine prop from Cancun to Holbox Island for 1 to 5 people.
Mayab Bus charges $6 one way to Chiquila and the ferry from there is $5.
Which do you think I chose?

You got it.  It only took 3.5 hours to arrive here so all in all not a bad journey for a $655 savings.  Throw in some local color gratis and the $11 more than paid for itself.

There I was minding my own business on the bus to Chiquila when some guy hopped on and began talking about Jesus and San Francisco or something that sounded like that.  I know I kept hearing the words for Jesus, God and several saints.   Next thing I know he holds up a jar of some cream with an obviously home made dot matrix printer label.  Just an observation here...if you are going to peddle some crap that probably will scorch the skin, at least affix the label straight.

For the next 20 minutes he stood there extolling the virtues of whatever this miracle healing junk was en espanol of course.   I guess jumping from a prayer to Jesus to green miracle creams isn't that much of a stretch in these parts.   A British guy sitting behind me and I named his product the Jesus Cream and a woman who could understand us was not amused.    Too bad.  We were.

Just when I thought he was done, a bottle of pink cream miraculously spawned out of his satchel.   Ten more minutes of preaching followed, and I couldn't help but wonder if anyone on that bus actually cared.  My view out the window was suddenly tainted by a green bottle about three inches from my eyes.  Not wanting to be sacriligious to something as holy as the Jesus Cream, I politely refused.  He kept on shaking the bottle in my face, and asked if I speak English.  I was ready to tell him I hope that stuff is slick because any longer in my face I was ready to bust that jar so far up his butt he'd choke on it.  I think he got the hint and he even wisely passed over the British guy.

A 25 minute ferry ride over to the island from Chiquila dropped me right off on the sandy main street.   This place is relaxed,  laid back and totally chilled out.   Holbox (pronounced Holebosh) makes even Key West seem like a tense metropolis. Snorkeling with the whale sharks was the main draw for me but the end of the season means hit or miss sightings. I am going to just pass and go kayaking with a group in the morning instead. It's a 4 hour trip through inlets, mangrove swamps and open ocean to see wildlife such as crocs and flamingos.

I am here for two nights.   I'd venture to say Holbox is a side of Mexico the average person will never see or has even heard of.  Now you're in the know.

How I got here:

5 minute walk on foot from Hostel Quetzel to downtown bus terminal Cancun
Mayab bus from downtown bus terminal to Chiquila - 0750 departure 80 pesos ($5.90) 2:45
Hermanos Ferry Line from Chiquila to Holbox Island - 1100 departure 70 pesos ($5) 25 minutes
10 minute walk on foot from dock to Tribu Hostel Holbox Island
