We started our trip by going to Bendigo and stayed at a friends house. We camped in their front garden. Next we went to Mildura and stayed in a campsite called River Road campsite. The River Road camp is right next to the Murray River. We went to Lake Mungo for a day trip. We climbed huge sand dunes and Alec found some emu foot prints.
We departed Bendigo at our version of the crack of dawn (roughly 10.00), stopping in Wedderburn to fire up the gas stove for coffee and a slice of Maureen. (Carrie's famous fruitcake is named for the author of the original recipe and has accompanied us on many trips over the years.)
By lunchtime we had reached Wycheproof, but with happy memories of too much cake, no one felt much like eatingMount Wycheproof, the world's shortest official mountain, which towers 43 metres above the surrounding plains.
Luckily, our mountaineering skills run deep and we had driven to near the top within minutes. The final ascent was quickly accomplished; the summit was ours!
By evening we had crossed the wheat fields of the Wimmera and the Mallee scrub lands and reached Mildura and our first night with Hilary and Alec properly in their tent. We planned only a brief stay, but we had long made plans to visit Lake Mungo in NSW. The following day we made a day trip out there, which you can read about in our next posting.
On Friday we decided that we had been ignoring school work and so settled down to half a day at diaries and exercise books. This delay allowed us the golden opportunity to visit Stefano di Pieri's cafe for lunch (we had checked out the famous restaurant, but figured that close to $350 for a meal with the family would be hard to justify). The food was magnificent (aside from the slight problem of Alec's pasta containing chilli, a problem which the staff quickly resolved).
We walked beside the river (sorry, "the Mighty Murray") and returned to camp for a necessarily light meal and another restful night.
