On the Sunday that we moved, we found ourselves starving around 8 PM or so. We decided to stop by Pizza Hut and then head over to the dorm to mooch their internet before heading back and spending our first official night in our new place. We arrived at Pizza Hut and I noticed these two foreign guys in line to order their food. They were both good looking, but one stood out more than the other (he had amazing blue eyes, I am such a sucker for ANY man with light-colored eyes...it's my kryptonite). They were both wearing dress pants and nice shirts with ties (for the men who are reading this...NEVER underestimate the effect nice clothes have on a woman). They made their order and then Meghan and I made ours. We sat down next to them and I listened in on what they were talking about. The first thing I noticed was that they spoke French. I was like...that's interesting...they are either from France or Quebec. I then took the opportunity to jump in and ask them (in French) where they came from. Turns out they were both from Montreal. Hmmm, small world. It's strange though...you really don't see many French-Canadians here in Taiwan...mostly the English speaking kind. I suppose it's because the French-speakers don't really qualify to be English teachers. LOL. No offense...Anyway....we chatted and I saw that their food was ready. They got up and were making a bee-line for the exit. I thought 'Man, I need to grow some balls and make use of opportunities like this when they present themselves'. So, I did. I asked him if I would be able to get his number. He seemed a bit surprised by this...but gave me his number nonetheless. I was euphoric...this was the first phone number (that WASN'T work related) I had gotten in Taiwan. I felt like I was making huge progress. Meghan and I got our pizza, went to the dorm and then went 'home' to our new abode. The next day I sent Mr. Blue Eyes (his name was Joel) a text message asking him if he wanted to meet for drinks sometime during the week. He agreed and set the date of Wednesday. Wednesday nights I teach at downtown Taoyuan...and so we agreed to meet at the McDonald's by the train station. We walked to this place called 'Rodeo' and starting chatting and having drinks. One of the first things I found out about him was that he had been in Taiwan for 8 months and had his plane ticket back to Montreal booked for April 19th. 'Damn, I thought...I knew there was a catch to meeting this guy.", but immediately relegated him to 'potential fling' status. The drinks flowed and so did the conversation. I was under the impression that we had really hit it off. He was flying out to Hong Kong the next day for a visa run and had to leave Taoyuan at 4 AM. We stayed at the bar til nearly 2 AM. We shared a cab to the train station...whereby I got off to get my scooter and he continued to his apartment. I went home feeling pretty good about myself. He had asked me what I was doing on Sunday and I told him that I had no plans. He said he would call me and maybe we could do something. I was overjoyed.
Sunday morning came...and I headed over to the dorm because I needed to get some work done. I saw him on Facebook and sent him a message, asking him indirectly what his plans for the day were. He said he planned on sleeping and then abruptly went offline. I sent him a message saying that when he was awake he would perhaps like to go grab a bite to eat. Some hours later he messaged back saying he had already planned to have dinner with his friends. I started to get a bad vibe. Monday rolled along and I politely asked him if he had any plans on doing something with me before he left the country. His response was 'I'm going to be really busy. Plus, I have more important people to see'. I was like...OUCH. You know...forgive me for the stereotype...but I can only base my observations on my personal experiences...but I had forgotten what rude assholes Quebequers could be. I guess since I have been out of the country for 3 years...my brain just pushed that fact to the back of my mind and kind of forgot about them. Mr. Blue Eyes: Joel Vinet...was a not-so-nice reminder that yes, indeed they are STILL all pricks. Anyway, I got the hint and just didn't message him or contact him again in any shape or form. If he was not interested, he should have just come out and said so...instead of dancing around the issue. Men...BAH!

We are not all rude assholes Quebequers !!!
Hi Athena,
I am from Quebec and I can tell you that this type of guy is not a typical Quebequers ! Please don't think we are all like that.
If one day you come to Quebec, I will show you a real good man that will make you forget Joel's behaviour :-)
Bye,
Dom
