More than a full month has passed as I write these last entries and try to get my memories and feelings for Egypt all wrapped up in one last, little blog. (Especially since some of the entries are SO long.)
I feel that people are either travelers, vacationers, or neither and I have yet to meet anyone who is a combination. I am not trying to judge anything between the categories, simply point out that they exist and there is no crossover.
I like to believe I am a traveler: always trying to get to the root of a place, an understanding of the people I meet and an appreciation for what I am and have. I am always dreaming about the next trip. Put me on a plane to anywhere, and I will find something there to appreciate because everywhere in the world has its own charm.
I really believe that there are fundamental truths, among them that we are all the same. I am not sure which existed first, this belief or the love of travel, but they surely support each other. This trip only served to continue to feed my desire to learn more, see more, meet more people, and understand better.
But the best part of the trip? I have found the perfect travel companion. Someone who may not plan like me, study like me or obsess over details like me, but who shares the same philosophy, love and respect for other people and different places. Someone who made me laugh when I was grumpy, sparked discussion when I was thinking, pointed out sites I would have missed on my own, connected with people, and listened and learned with an open heart. Truth is we might not get another chance for a trip this epic, but I know with confidence that we will travel again... and that is enough for me. Ben, after ten years together, you passed my final test, and I can't wait for our next adventure!
For all those who asked for my favourite part of the trip, and to whom it was so hard to answer, here it is, the best I can summarize:
Ashley's Top Ten
1) White Desert
2) Worker's Tombs, Luxor
3) All of Siwa Oasis
4) Catacombs, Alexandria
5) Felucca Trip, Aswan
6) Merditertanean Sea, Marsa Matrouh
7) Sunrise at Abu Simbel
8) Alabaster Mosque, Cairo
9) The Ramesseum/ Medinet Habu, Luxor
10) Egyptian Antiquities Museum, Cairo
11) Great Hypostyle Hall, Karnak Temple, Luxor
I can't imagine having had a more amazing trip, or more perfect honeymoon. Although I would change some things now, in hindsight, I recognize that the only way I would know that is to have completed that exact trip-and so I have no regrets, not a single one.
I hope I have entertained some, taught some, and preferably inspired some.
