Today we celebrated Sofia's birthday with a nice get together at the Chaoyang Theater and Annie's Italian Restaurant. To make things even better, Charles, her boyfriend was in town visiting from Sweden.

We were treated to a night of acrobatics by a local Beijing troupe at the Chaoyang Theater. Their acts included balancing on a wooden plank, Chinese yo-yos, body contortion, a big hamster wheel, spinning discs, Chinese strongmen, hoop hurdling and balancing on bicycles. The theater itself was rather empty compared to my previous experience back in 2006 while visiting Shanghai. It may have been slow business due to the winter weather or fierce competitions from other acrobatic groups. Regardless, the show lasted nearly 90 minutes and was a visual splendor. I was able to capture some shots on my camera from awkward seating position in order to sneak in some shots. In addition to the show, in the row directly in front of us was a little girl who was probably more interested in dancing in the aisle than viewing the actual acrobatics. She was playfully jumping around and mimicked some of the acrobats on stage. You can see her in some of my shots.

After the show, we scurried over to Annie's Italian Restaurant which was 2 subway stops away on line 10. I had previously been to Annie's with a friend, and highly recommended to my friends as a nice contrast to the local dives we tend to land ourselves in while in Wudaokou. We filled our bellies with the complimentary bread before our actual meals arrived then we indulged ourselves in the fine dining that is pasta. Chocolate cake also awaited us back at the dorm where Stacey had planned a nice surprise for her roommate.
