. But after about 5-10 mins the gardner caught the bird and we released it back outside. It made for an exciting morning with the students.
The week of Thanksgiving went by fast. We had a short week because of the holiday. At school we had a Thanksgiving lunch where we had a typical Thanksgiving meal and the parents could come in and eat with the students. On Thanksgiving some of the teachers got together for a potluck to celebrate. In typical fashion we all ate way too much and had a great time together. It was nice to still have a get together. I was also able to skype with both my family and Kevin's family. The DeGreeff's were still able to take a family picture together. It does a good job representing out life for the past couple years. It was the 4th Thanksgiving in a row that I haven't been able to be with my family. With Kev's family I was able to say hello to everyone thanks to Tana's Ipad and the joys of technology. It was nice to get to check in with them during the holidays.
On Friday 6 of us teachers headed out of town for a little weekend getaway. We were headed to Tortuguero National Park. This is a national park in the middle of the rainforest. We had to take a 1 hour boat ride to get to our resort. As one would expect in the rainforest, it rained a lot
! Upon arrival to our hotel we were able to take a tour into the town of Tortuguero which was across the river from where we were staying. It was a pretty simple town where we were able to do some shopping. We also went to the beach, which is it's main tourist attraction because this is where the sea turtles come to lay their eggs from August-October. While we were there it was nearing the end of the hatching season. We went to check out the beach but then I decided to head back and check out one last shop while 2 of the other girls walked a little ways up the beach and they were able to see a baby turtle making it's way back to the ocean. That was the only turtle seen through the weekend, so I missed out. But I was able to see lots of other wildlife. The next morning we went on a walk through the rainforest. Luckily they had boots for us to wear because it was MUDDY! We were sometimes wading through a couple inches of water. But while walking through we so sloths, howler monkeys (they make this strange, loud howling noise), and some crazy plants. After that we had some down time and we sat around the pool. Though it was too cold to swim we sat around and watched monkeys swinging and jumping from the trees and saw some toucans flying from the trees as well. After our relaxing afternoon we were able to go on a boat tour through the national park where we got to see even more wildlife. We saw more sloths, monkeys, and toucans as well as a boa constrictor, iguana, Jesus Christ lizard (the ones that can run across water), lots of birds and caymen (similar to crocodile but smaller)
. It was pretty cool. It felt like I was in Jurassic Park! That evening we went on a walk along the beach in search of baby turtles but didn't see any. The following day we headed back to San Jose. It was a great trip and fun to spend time in the rainforest. Unfortunately, I went unprepared. The weather was much colder than I had been expecting so I ended up getting sick but it was still a fun trip.
Since then I have been busy at school wrapping up the quarter. The week went by quickly and hopefully the next weeks will go by just as quickly. This week we have 3 days of class and then we take our students on our over night field trip to Tirimbina. The following week we have 3 1/2 days of school and then Kev is here!!! Only 11 more days! I can't wait! Vacation and relaxing is much needed and of course I can't wait to do that with Kev!! Luckily, warmer weather has returned. After about a month and a half of cold, rainy weather I was finally able to lay out at the pool yesterday. Unfortunately, I decided to not be smart about it and didn't use sunscreen and have now found myself sunburnt! Opps! You think I would know better by now! Well better now than when Kevin is here! I told him I was making an example of myself so that he makes sure that he wears his sunscreen while he is here! hehe
Hope you all have a great week.
Well it has been a while and there has been a lot of excitement here in Costa Rica! I will start with the week before Thanksgiving. We had a pretty exciting moment in my classroom. I was at the front of my class teaching with my door open to the outside like normal when I suddenly looked toward the door to see 2 birds swooping in my door straight towards me! The flew into my classroom and proceeded to swoop back and forth across my classroom trying to find an escape. One was able to escape quickly but the other had a little more trouble and kept flying across my room swooping down near the students every time. This meant that the students would scream with each swoop. Luckily a school gardener was outside my door and came to my rescue! He worked with me to help capture the bird. Before we were able to catch it though the bird was able to make a mess around my classroom. Out of fear when it was flying around the class it began to poop all over the class. We had some student more become victim to this
