Well I survived my first week back to school! It was a crazy week and I was left exhausted by Friday. Luckily it was only a 4 day week. We had Wednesday off because it was Mother's Day. It provided a nice break mid week to get ready for the last two days.

Well my class is great. I have been told over and over that it is one of the nicest groups of students to come through Country Day School (CDS) in the past 20 years. They are just a very hardworking and genuinely nice group. I have a group of 15, but only had 14 for the first week since one was gone for the week. It has been fun working with such a small group and having the chance to get to know each of them. They all come with such amazing stories for 5th graders! Most have lived in multiple countries some speak more that more than 3 languages and all of them have done a lot of traveling, mostly international. The question of, "What did you do this summer?" takes on a whole new meaning with them. I had students spend summer in the US, China and various cities through Central America! Very lucky kids!

On my first day of class I showed up and immediately had a student turn to me and say, "You look like you are going to be a nice teacher!" Then this same student wrote in a letter to me, "Some of my hopes for this year are for you to be nice all year long like you are now, thank you." I think he is a little worried I might turn into a mean teacher!

I have also met a lot of my parents already. They all seem very nice. I am a little nervous because this week we have our Back to School Night. This is like our open house night where all the parents come in and we explain everything about our classroom. Parents can be scary! Hopefully it will go smoothly!

Outside of the classroom, it has been pretty low key. School has been making me pretty exhausted so I haven't been out doing too much. I have tried out a couple restaurants. I have yet to have a bad meal! Though on Friday I did try a drink that is common among woman. Supposedly it is supposed to taste similar to a beer margarita. You get a glass with lime or lemon juice then top it off with your beer and the glass is rimmed with salt. Let me tell you it was not very good! I would need to try one of those again!

I am also really noticed just how expensive some of the imported things are here. Especially cosmetics. I was doing my shopping at Walmart and was going to pick up some new mascara. For a Cover Girl simple mascara it was almost $10, the more fancy ones were almost $20! Crazy! Face wash and eye makeup remover were also pushing $10 a piece! I would say the simple solution is to have it all shipped here but I have heard there are some taxes on things when they get shipped in. I am not entirely sure how it works. But I will have Kevin bring a full suitcase of goodies from the U.S. with him when he comes in December!
