Two weekends ago I finally made it to Lukang. Lukang is a popular place to visit that is located just outside of the city of Taichung. It is just a short bus ride away. I went with a couple other teachers from school and my Taiwanese friend, Jane. She can in handy that day, I am not used to traveling with a translator! It made the day a little easier, which is always nice.

We spent the day exploring the sights of Lukang. It is a small town with lots of food stalls and little shops. Upon entering the market area we came upon a celebration at a temple. This was unlike any temple celebration I had ever seen. There were the normal parts of processions that I have seen before complete with lots and lots of fire crackers but this procession offered some new things. The first thing we noticed was the man stumbling around with a huge sword in his hand. When he continued walking and passed us we realized that he was bleeding down this back. He was swinging the sword over his shoulders and hitting his back. WEIRD! Then we noticed a man in a yellow robe, also stumbling around with some sort of glass in his hand. He was stumbling and fell over a couple times. Confused and shocked we had Jane ask around to find out what was going on. Turns out both of these men had a "spirit" in them and they were not harming themselves and couldn't feel the pain. The man in the yellow robe was worshiping or honoring a god who used to drink a lot so he was drunk. It was quite the sight to see.

After seeing the celebration we decided to continue our tour of Lukang. We walked the streets until we find the "Old Street". This was a really cute cobble stone street with little shops along the way. It was fun to see some of the old buildings and of course do some shopping. After the Old Street we made our way to Touching Breast Ally. Now before you get too concerned this is an all that got it's name because two people can not walk abreast in the ally without running into each other. In other words it is a very small ally. From there we went to Longshan Temple. This temple was a very simple temple but is famous because of how old it is.

After visiting the main sights we did a little bit more wandering around town before we made our way back to Taichung. Visiting Lukang was a nice day trip and a fun and easy way to get out of Taichung. I am sure that I will make another visit soon.

More updates to follow soon! :)

Until ya and miss ya!
