Had a wonderful flight from Amsterdam to Johannesburg. Sat by a South African woman who works for the Norwegian Embassy. We chatted for a good while, she referred a couple of books to me about elephants and rhinos, and gave me her business card and instructed me to e-mail her if I need anything and she will do her best to take care of me. I know we are a nation a part, but there's something comforting about making connections nearer to Windhoek than Missouri.
Got through passport control here just fine as well, was told I didn't even need to go through customs, and was shown the exit (not sure how all of that worked since I don't even have a South African Visa, I think the passport check man gave me one?? still confused). Before customs though, I discovered that one of my bags was delayed since my flight from KC to Houston was delayed and had me close to missing my flight. I was told it would be redirected to Windhoek and should arrive around Monday. I am just thankful that it technically isn't "lost", just not where I'd like it to be.
The biggest perk I've noticed about South Africa so far is the cheaper food... 1 US Dollar = 10 R. Granted menu prices are like 52.90 for quesadillas, 39.90 for potato skins, 62.90 for chicken pot pie, but considering it's an airport and I don't think I've ever seen anything for $6 at an airport for a meal in the Untied States, I'm pretty happy. Waitress even told me she would move me somewhere that I can lay down after I get some food, awfully nice of her.
Speaking of food, it has arrived. So I'm off! Hopefully I will have anther post by morning and hopefully it will have something about how nice it was to have a shower finally! :-)
I FINALLY MADE IT TO AFRICAAAAA!
