As part of the UNK study abroad program we are obligated to teach English in designated high schools for a grade.  In the beginning of the semester, we set up conversation tables on campus with other students our age.  We also tutored English during certain hours of the day.
This week we finally got to go to the high schools because they just started their fall semester for the Peruvians.  The High School is close to UPC campus and is a private school.  The school campus was very nice, they even had a church.  We met up with the teachers there and they brought us to the students and split us into groups.  We weren't exactly in a classroom, it was more like an auditorium or meeting area.  Although the school was co-ed both classes we had had only girls.
Our first class was fourth graders around the age of 14 and 15. The girls had prepared us with questions about our interest and the normal conversation starters.  Their English was extremely good.  Some of the girls could talk at the same speed as us.  Although some girls were a little behind because they hadn't gone to schools that specialized in English.  Also it was easy to tell the shy students from the outgoing students in the groups.  We tried to incorporate them in our conversations by asking them questions and making them feel more secure.  A couple of the girls English was better than our college level Spanish and that is saying something.
Our second group was fifth graders or what we call seniors in High School.  They were all around the age 16 or 17.  They didn't seem to need any help with their English either.  So it seems that these visits are more for our cultural immersion than for their English.  At least we got to see the type of environment their high schools had and the way they are set up.
After our two hour English session, the faculty treated us to hot dogs and pop.  The experience was an overall success and I am looking forward to next weeks classes.
