San Agustin to Popayan
Entry 69 of 75 | show all | print this entry |
Well time to move along with the end of the trip in sight... So I got up early and headed out for Cruce de San Jose to await the many many buses I was told would stop and pick me up :-) As it turns out there were very few of them, and not all of them even stopped!! Those that did said they were full and we could stand if we wanted. I decided to wait a bit, but in the end got on some old bone shaker that said would have room at the next town. We got to the Ismos the next town, but the only seat was right at the back, and I decided to jump the bus and take my chances with another one. The guy was not pleased, but I gave him 2000 and got off anyway. I tried the ticket agents, but the best they would do is reserve one in the next bus for 25000, so once again I thought I would take my chances, seeing as the ticket should be 20000... I was sort of lucky in that one stopped, also full, but they would let me sit on a cushion on the floor for 15000, which I did. It was very hot, given I was sat over the motor, and when it started to rain the dirt road caused us to go slower and slower. In the end we took 8 hours to do the 100km of road, a real crawl, and I got into Popayan well after dark :-( As it turns out all was good, cos the town was really nice and seemed very safe, and the bus station was very near to the town center, in fact even the airport was in walking distance!!!. So got in to Casa Familiar, which had dorms for 10000, and space, and hot water and nice beds, and I was sure ready for that. Yeah I think I am reaching the end of my time n the hard travelling road, and look forward to some better class of bus in Ecuador, but we will have to see... Popayan was good, cheap and safe and the people seemed extra friendly, so I decided to stay a few more days, and leave for Ecuador on Wednesday. I ran into the Canadian Lorna, who I had met in Taganga, Cartagena, and Bogotá, and she was also going to Ecuador, so we planned to leave together. But that will be another story... Ha la orden!!! :-)
