Yungaburra, Australia
Entry 26 of 27 | show all | print this entry |
Another 2 fun-filled days with On The Wallaby adventure tours in the Tablelands of Australia. These guys made me bike 12km (which was much too difficult for my level of fitness and I ended up walking my bike up one of the hills) around the surrounding farmlands, but then we rewarded ourselves with a swim in a crater lake created by old volcanic activity in the area. We also did some platypus spotting (and we did spot 2!), and a night canoeing adventure where we learned about the village that was submersed under the lake we were canoeing on and saw a tree kangaroo and some other Australian critters. But the highlight of the trip was our day canoeing trip where we painted ourselves with war paint using Aboriginal stones and then went to war in our canoes, splashing and tipping each other over. Great fun and thank goodness for the hot showers and dry towels afterwards. After 60+ days in constant sunlight and continuous layers of sunscreen and bugspray, the small hairs on my arms have started to turn blonde!! This looks pretty strange with my now dark, dark skin and my blonde hairs glistening. Australians have their own slang which has taken some getting used to. Here a few common slang terms... *Bob's your uncle = There you go. There it is. That's right. As in "This strangler fig tree surrounds and kills it's host tree, the host tree decomposes, and 100 years later, Bob's your Uncle, you've got this hollw strangler fig!" *Fag = cigarette. As in "I need a fag". *Mate = friend. Everyone really says this all the time here. Applies for both men and women, mate.
