Gili Air Island, Lombok, Indonesia
Entry 22 of 27 | show all | print this entry |
Ahhhh....Gili Air Island....this place is soooo relaxing! I met 3 girls on the boat over here (one from Hawaii, one from California, and one from Taiwan) and we have been hanging out under bamboo huts, lounging on pillows, eating, and snorkelling for the last few days. This lifestyle is likely to continue for the next few days, if not the next few years :) There's nothing to do here on Gili except enjoy the beautiful scenery while sipping a cold drink...and that's perfect. The island is only about 2km long and 1km wide, so very tiny and almost empty (it's low tourist season). While snorkelling today, we saw lots of sea turtles! Gili Air is exactly like a postcard...sparkling, clear blue waters, small bungalows on the beach, tiny huts with pillows to eat and lounge on, and white sand. No big hotels (my 2 story bungalow (that I'm sharing with a cute 50 yr old Tawainese woman I met on the boat) is the tallest building on the island), no big chain restaurants (every hotel serves some local seafood and has a wood oven for pizzas)...this is my kind of place! I also did one dive off Gili Meno, but the snorkelling was just as good and cheaper. After 5 days on Gili Air, it feels like I know everyone on the island. I walk past the same local guys everyday and know many of their names by now. Locals call us Mango friends (Me and the girls I met here)...since they think we are friends from childhood, just like mangos grow up in pairs on the tree. Locals call me Gado-Gado, which is a favorite local food and means 'mixed' (since I'm mixed Thai and Indian). The water on this place is all salty because there's no purification system. So showers never really feel that clean (as you are washing with salt water) and you can't really do laundry. But after a week, you get used to it and it doesn't bother you anymore. Besides, everyone else smells the same while vacationing on this island :)
