Wednesday July 16, 2008

I found sleep difficult to come by last night.   Did we get everything packed?  Was the camper packed correctly?  Did everyone really understand what they were to do while we were gone?  We were up and on the road early so as to miss St Louis rush hour.  The weather was perfect.  Mostly clear skies all day and low 80's during the afternoon.  Not bad at all for mid July in Missouri.  Opal volunteered to keep the daily journal which meant that she would have to record any wildlife that we saw.  She made her first entry early today when a possum crossed the road in front of us on US40 near Lake St Louis.  Our first stop was in Troy Missouri - just a quick break at a local fuel mart.

We stopped at Mark Twain Lake for a picnic and rest break and we had the place all to ourselves.  It was so quiet.  Jeffery spotted a deer as we were leaving the picnic area.

Our next stop was a fuel stop in Macon Missouri.  Gas was 3.96/GAL.  My early estimates were that we would get around 15 miles per gallon on the trip.  WRONG!  Actual usage was going to be less than 10 miles per gallon.  We arrived in Crowder State Park a little after 4.  We had reservations for campsite number 16.  Reservations would not have been needed as the park had many vacancies.  After setting up camp we went into Trenton to pick up a few things.  Saw a nice buck and 3 wild turkeys on the way back to the campground along highway 6.  We cooked hot dogs over the fire and played some Yahtzee before calling it a night.  Made minor electric brake adjustments to camper during first 100 miles.  No other tow issues discovered.  308 miles driven today.
