First evening in Buenos Aires - dinner

      After a day getting settled into our wonderful little hotel in the San Telmo District of Buenos Aires and strolling the pedestrian only shopping street Calle Florida, Anne and Kurt arranged for dinner at a small local eatery. The Cafe San Juan is owned by a newly-famous chef and his ex-wife. He opened his first restaurant recently, making simple Argentine fare and the place gained a cult following. The self-made chef then gained such notoriety, he was given a national TV show.
Tonight's meal, at his second restaurant finds us at a table for 10 right in front of the kitchen where we can see he and his crew preparing our dishes. They wear baseball shirts with the restaurant name and two meat cleavers framing the words. Their ball caps have various logos on them and the chef wears his turned backwards. Our dishes include baked whole trout that arrives in a large casserole surrounded by carrots and others enjoy steak grilled with roasted vegetables.
      The staff sets the wines on the table. The bottles are simply opened and passed around family style. The reds are two different vineyard designates from Bodegas Catena Zapata: Saint Felicien Malbec and another 85% Malbec- 15% Cabernet from Nicasia Vineyard. A floral Torrentes from Bodegas Alta Vista makes eyebrows of even the most red-centric of us to rise in delight.
       After this meal, we will all sleep well!
