One bus and one ferry ride later we landed in Punta Arenas, Chile. The name literally means "Sandy Point" and historically the city of 120,000 has been a penal colony, international sheep farming centre and coal ship refueling stop. Today it is the commercial heart of Patagonia and a major tourist stop [over]. The town does have a huge 100,000 strong local penguin colony, but we had already spent lots of quality time with those furry little things back in Ushuaia so skipped the visit here.
Our goal in Punta Arenas was mainly to relax, and that we did. After a bit of cruising we found a great Chocolate Café where we wasted countless hours sipping amazing concoctions of milk, espresso, and various chocolates. Once able to escape from the Chocolatta we decided to try something different for dinner.
As mentioned earlier in the blog the Canadian Beaver is a big problem in Patagonia due to the lack of predators...well there is one predator, homo sapiens. That's right, we found a Paradilla (Grill House) with the big ole Beaver on the menu. Now we've never eaten beaver before so this was something exotic to experience. The first bite was interesting, similar to a rabbit. Second bite was strong with a gamey taste. Third bite we weren't sure if we were eating beaver, dog, or rat - not great. Arik did his best to finish the plate, but his best effort was only half the portion.
Well Mr. Beaver, your coat is very nice and you build cute little houses but you make a poor meal!!
