Where I stayed
Set off from SLC early this morning, and the motel was right near the freeway, so we were immediately in traffic. Amazing really, as the traffic in central SLC was so sparse. Maybe Temple Square isnt the centre of the automobile activity there, but it was quite different from, say, Provo, which is not far away, and a city of lesser importance.
Made our way up the freeway for a spell, and then turned off onto lower grade roads. At the speed we travel, thats no problem, and the lesser traffic is ideal for us. Most of the day was spent driving, and the scenery, whilst not as astounding as it had bee in southern Utah, was still very pleasing. Rolling hills and mountains, rivers, all very relaxing.
Anyway, we are now at the Painted Buffalo in Jackson, a very pleasant motel, an independant. They even have a buffalo on exch bed! However, they are not complimentary, and as you check in, they point this out on the bill! I guess its just a way to encourage kids to "Daddy, I want one!" Just as well Fiona isnt here!
Mileage 273, a good days travel. Went through 7821 ft, and we climbed 10970 ft altogether today.
Martin's mileage moment:
Thankfully the hub has held out and we have made good progress today.Thank you Bob and the boys at Tire City. Our apologies to Jon - we didn't make it to Pat's Place last night. We seriously did make an effort and went down by TRAX but took wrong turn and ended up in what appeared to have been a real Chinese restaurant.Roger liked the chopsticks.I thought they were hard to swallow
Impressive thing of the day? We are all familiar with yellow school buses in US but we learned early on that you are not allowed to overtake a parked bus i.e. one from which children may be boarding or alighting. Not until today did we realise that this applies to oncoming traffic also - the buses are equipped with forward-facing red lights and an illuminated arm with word "STOP" is lowered to side -facing both back and front..When the bus stops all the traffic stops. What a brilliant idea!
So - the mileage moment? I was looking through our schedule this evening and it appears we do not have as much time on our side as we thought.I was hoping we could spend a couple of days in Chicago and perhaps take in a football game for Roger's birthday on 5 November .Also will need to leave a day or so floating to cover car issues and/or problems with getting freight organised for Stanley. We'll have a sort out this evening.
