Had a relaxed breakfast with Shelaagh & Karl, as the decision was taken that we would spend the day with them, rather than dash off on the first day of the journey.Spent some time sorting out Stanley - Martin decided that he should check the level of oil in the diff, as it had leaked previously, and they had done some work on it. Unfortunately, that meant removing everything from the back and the seat belts and the wooden paneling as well. Then refitting everything and repacking, so this is not a task you want to do too often! We set off in Karl's car late morning and drove North up the coast. Stopped off for a bite to eat, overlooking the sea, and walked along the beach looking for sand dollars. We made Shealagh (who was the only one in sandals) go and fill  a bottle of water from the sea. We will take it to the East coast and let it go there. Apparently thats what one is supposed to do?
Then we drove back, stopping off for coffee, and looking at a mission that had been built in San Luis. The church was very attractive, in an L shape. Was this to segregate the men from the women? No, it was the easiest way to extend the church when it was decided it wasnt big enough for the congregation. The decoration was interesting, with pillars painted on the walls, together with painted shadows so it looks as if the sun streaming in the window is casting a real shadow from the real pillar.Unfortunately, a few minutes into our visit, a young lady came past to tell us that they were closing in 2 minutes!Stopped off on the way back in a WalMart, you know, the store where we get the pictures of totally inappropriately dressed customers? Didnt see any of them though.Bought a mobile phone - as using our UK phones here is hugely expensive and if we want to book hotels ahead, it'll be muuch cheaper. Also a cool box, as drinking the water when we were driving up to Solvang was disgusting - it was almost hot in the weather we have been having. However, now we have bought the cool box, the wweather will now become cold.A great dinner back at Shelagh and Karl's, they have really looked after us well. I did suggest that we should stay here for 4 weeks and then fly to New York, but no-one else thought it was a good idea.So tomorrow its an early start, back via LA and into the desert. Hopefully Sunday wont be too much traffic, and an early start means we might not be travelling in the hea of the day.Hopefully.

Martin's Sunday morning moment:
Hoping to leave by 8am,had originally thought about 6 but firing up in a residential area might not be the best way to leave our excellent hosts. So we  are trying to miss the traffic and the heat and get as far as we can before the heat gets us.We might be lucky and get all the way to Barstow but the forecast from about noon on is 90 degrees.Trouble is we have too much information - it may have been twice that in Mongolimamahama but we didn't know it.We are carrying enough water to irrigate most of the Mojave, including a bottle of West Coast seawater that is destined for the East Coast. They're short over there. So dear reader enough of this lazing around - lets hit the road.

Hi There
Glad you are on your way. I've had problems in the US using debit cards. They want credit cards a they can see if there is enough credit on them. They can't do this with a debit card as it relies on your bank balance being healthy enough. Had problems with hotels and car hire. Anyway this is what they claim,
But not to worry you're on your way. Say hello as you pass Santa Barbara for me. It's where Elctro Optical are.
Safe travelling.-- Cheers Mike

It's good to have the blog back up and running. I saw a repeat of Stephen Fry doing America in his black cab and they didn't seem to bother about his different vehicle either. Maybe nothing surprises Americans.

Take care
