Woke up early this morning feeling decidedly ill. Must have been the salad last night. Very nice Shepherds salad, to go with the lamb chops and a coke. No beer on the menu, this is a Muslim country and were weren't prepared to go into confrontation. Hoever as we finished our meal, a guy came and sat at a table near us and ordered a beer, without any problems! As I said, must have been the salad - and we had been warned not to eat any salads as you dont know how well they have been washed. So I guess its my fault,, and I'm not going into any more details.
Set off today in some trepidation over the wheel studs. Martin drove most of the day, not sure whether that's in sympathy oveer my being ill, or over concern for my driving and his studs! Stopped off at lunch time for petrol, and as usual we had a great crowd of admirers, who spoke no English
carried on driving, the roads vary from amazingly good, equivalent to out M1 but without the roadworks or traffic, to amazingly bad, potholed and rough. We are on a main road, dual carriageway, but not the Autoroute.
Had a guy pass us, then slow down to take a photo. Well, had that MANY times, but this guy kept on passing us and then slowing down. Real pain. Eventually we lost him.
Pulled into a laybye which had water available. Martin got out his plastic bucket and started to wash the car. Doesn't an English gentleman always wash his car on a Sunday? Any way, the guy who passed us came in behind us and wanted to ask all the usual questions. Eventually he left. I drove the rest of the way, and here we are in Merizifon. Stopped at a truckers hotel, which looked a dive, so went on the the next one and booked in. This one is a dive! Still, only TL20 a night each, about £15 total bill. Bet it doesnt include breakfast! And avoid the salads!
Distance 265miles, av speed 39.8 max speed 57.9
Well what a difference a day makes
Still plenty of high rise developments Soviet style. Reminds me of a drive through North Prague. But here somebody found the yellow paint pot.And the pink, and blue and...Road repairers use humans instead of cones.Probably serves a number of needs. Some are usefully employed in waving a red flag in a desultory fashion whilst using either their mobile phone or is it an intercom to the previous red flag waver? Petrol/Benzine an outrageous price if I could understand it.We reckon about £1.70 alitre.A big improvement on yesterday.Feeling hopeful again.Booked in to a roadside truckers hotel.Seems a shame road builders missed it when flattening out the area.As Roger pointed out, price is good.Bad news is that we only have 40 Turkish Lira left.If its not enough for dinner and breakfast we will attempt to use Euros. If that doesn't work I'll sell Roger - he looks more like a monarch than I do.Just seen on telly that Istanbul is celebrating the Persian New Year.Confused between these images and those of West going in to Libya. Why?I think we know why. What is happening in Japan?Just noticed Hillary Clinton is smaller than Sarkosy.Who would have thought it?World seems to have gone mad since we left UK.Hope you are all there when we get back
And Abdullah? Well I have not got enough verses for next 7 weeks so I will keep you waiting once more dear reader.Time to introduce a new character. But I'm sure most of you have recognised it by now.
Its difficult not to have sympathy with Gaddafy's character. If we are bewildered by world's reaction to supposed human rights violations in Libya when we have stood by and seen Africans and Europeans die by the hundreds of thousands - he looks like some of us feel. No just give us a major power (preferably one with strategic importance) like Libya and the Falklands and we'll show you how hard we are.
Back soon. M
