Where I stayed
Spent a bit of time on the car, cleaning the carburettor to fix a sticky float, and also sorting the smell of petrol, which we identified as coming from the sender unit on the top tank. Cant do much about that until the tank is emptied, its only recently we have used that tank. The owner of the hotel came out of his house to help us, providing tools and offering all kinds of help, even a long line to his compressor so we could use compressed air! Gave us is card and told us that if we had any problems, to call him!
Drove along comfortably, traffic was atrocious! We saw two people driving the wrong way along the hard shoulder of the motorway, doesnt appear to be a problem in this part of the world
Managed to get to Istanbul. Martin wanted to visit the old section, but the traffic was terrible, didnt know where we were going, couldnt read the signs, what a disaster. Eventually gave up and headed out. We got to a toll booth, and went through the automaitic gate, the light switched to red, but as there was no barrier, we carried on going! The next toll booth we felt we should get a ticket, which cost 50 lira - about £40. However its a card which lets you through tolls untoil you have used all the money, so we have quite a lot left - not that it'll be of use to us.
Continued on, and then found that one of the wheel nuts had sheered off. Cause concern, but later we found another had sheered off the other rear wheel. We continued until we got to Duzce, where we managed to find an engineering workshop. The guy removed the wheels, took off the hubs, fabricated replacement studs and fitted them for us. When he took off the first wheel, another stud came off! So 3 were replaced.
That took us until about 6.30, so we headed to the nesrest hotel, which is very pleasant. Cant imagine how these hotels pay for themselves, there cant be that many tourists, and how many locals can stay in all these hotels? However thats not our problem.
Mileage 213 Av speed 35, max speed 56
(If you are looking at these, the average speed is unreliable as in includes when i was moving around the workshop, etc. So dont read anything into it)
We actually discovered severed wheel nut in morning when going over car.2nd one on opposite side we found when we stopped off at Burger King for a coffee. My mood went from dark grey to a fetching shade of black, where it has remained most of the day.I wonder if we have found the weak spot.We are carrying a load of extra weight which is putting tremendous braking strain on wheel studs, not to mention impact on them when we drop into a pot hole.So downside is we are carrying the weight, upside is that we have bits on board to fix it.We had the special hub socket, taps and dies.So its a conundrum. My answer is to go easy on brakes, drive on the gearbox and don't drive into the dark which we seem to do repeatedly so cannot see the potholes.Turks drive like madmen and only seem to have one set of clothes.A bit like us really.
Was going to push on a bit further than we did but just took it into my head to go off the road into a row of motormechaniciens-tyrefitters,exhausts etc. and there in the middle was a man with a lathe and welding gear.Just the job.
Still we are a day and a bit in front of schedule w hich we will keep in reserve.
has rained at some point nearly every day so the wipers would have been a bit handy - instead you drive with one hand and operate wipers manually with other.
No verses tonight - bit bushed - but he'll be back.
